CQ WPX SSB last weekend

Anyone says propagation was not that good last weekend is lying. It was excellent, so was the weather over here. It was a dificult decision to be on the radio inside the house or in the garden outside. I had to divide my time. Radio activity was most times in the evening. Though I managed to be on the radio at least at one greyline, working DXCCs I never heard before with signals you wouldn't believe....

The CQ WW WPX SSB 2011 brought me a lot of new DXCC. Here a summary of the most interesting:

I did not work 160m this time as I was hunting for DX and 160m is most likely not the place to be without a proper 160m antenna.


Als er iemand zegt dat de condities slecht waren afgelopen weekend dan liegt degene dat hij barst. Want de condities waren super. Het weer ook.....dus heb ik mijn tijd verdeelt tussen de radio en de tuin. De meeste radio activiteiten waren dan ook 's avonds. Het is me wel gelukt in ieder geval 1 greyline voor de radio te zitten en dat was te merken, ik werkte DXCC's die ik nog nooit eerder heb gehoord met signalen van soms over de S9. Het eerste station dat ik Zaterdag middag werkte was direct HK1X (Colombia) die hier gewoon een echte 5/9 was. En zo werd ik eigenlijk de hele contest verrast door de sterke signalen. Bovenstaand een paar resultaten. Dit keer geen 160m gewerkt omdat ik hoofdzakelijk DX zocht, en dat zal ik naar alle waarschijnlijkheid niet vinden zonder een echte 160m antenne op die band.

12m QRP activity

Eco 7 antenna at SV0XCC/9

I did not have much time for radio lately. But today I had 5 minutes to setup WSPR on 12m with my FT817 and the horizontal loop. Since I had to tune the loop first I noticed a SSB signal on the band. It was SV0XCC/9 Paul from Crete Isl. who was calling with his just obtained new license. Since I had the FT817 still  on 1W for WSPR purposes I just though I give him a shout to see what would happen. I was surprised he came back in Dutch language and gave me a 5/6 report. Switching the FT817 on 5W increased my report only to 5/7. A really nice QRP QSO. 
Then I left the radio on WSPR to do some other things in and around the house. I was spotted by G8JNJ/A, DK6UG and KB2MEN. The strange thing is that I didn't spot them but different stations who did not spot me...DL6YCA, WA3QHJ and LX2GT. Propagation seems not always be reciprocal.


De laatste tijd niet veel tijd gehad voor de radiohobby. Maar vandaag toch nog 5 minuutjes om de radio even op 12m WSPR te zetten met de FT817 en de horizontale loop.  Omdat ik de loop eerst moest tunen hoorde ik toevallig een sterk SSB signaal. Dit bleek SV0XCC/9 Paul uit Kreta te zijn die riep met zijn zojuist verkregen nieuwe call. Omdat ik de FT817 nog op 1W had staan voor WSPR dacht ik gewoon maar even voor de grap te roepen om te kijken wat er zou gebeuren. Tot mijn verassing kwam Paul terug met een 5/6 rapport. Het vermogen naar 5W zetten resulteerde in een 5/7 rapport, zo weinig maakte het eigenlijk uit. Ik denk dat het met 0,5W ook wel gelukt zou zijn. Toch een leuk QRP QSO. Daarna liet ik de radio op WSPR staan om andere dingen te gaan doen. Ik werd gespot door G8JNJ/A, DK6UG en KB2MEN. Gek genoeg ontving ik heel andere stations DL6YCA, WA3QHJ en LX2GT. Condities zijn blijkbaar niet altijd reciproke.

Harvesting 10m WSPR signals

Today there was absolutely nothing to do on 10m WSPR. Except for receiving my neighbour PA0O and the ever appearing signal from FR1GZ at Reunion. I was spotted by no one, strange enough not even by PA0O?? But luckely I was there yesterday and Wednesday late afternoon. It was just like harvesting, but then WSPR spots. With my 1W and multiband Alu foil vertical I was spotted by VK6GOS, VK5BC and VK5ZK, and wednesday just before the band was closing by AF4ID in Florida USA. I still think WSPR is an amazing mode, call me addicted.


Vandaag was er absoluut niets te doen op 10m WSPR. Behalve dan het ontvangen van mijn "buurman" PA0O en en het altijd aanwezige signaal van FR1GZ uit Reunion. Niemand die mij ontving, zelfs niet PA0O?? Gelukkig was er meer te doen gisteren en eergisteren en kon ik de WSPR spots gewoon oogsten. Met mijn 1W and multiband Alu folie antenne werd ik gespot door VK6GOS, VK5BC en VK5ZK. Woensdag werd ik net voor het sluiten van de band gespot door AF4ID in Florida USA. Ik vind WSPR nog steeds een geweldige mode, misschien ben ik er wel aan verslaafd.
