Cheap Alinco rechargables

Left the original one, right the new ones.

For a while ago I needed my Alinco HT and came to the conclusion my 9,6V accupack had died. I rebuilt a 4,8V one with new 1,2V rechargables and the idea was to do the same this time with eneloop batteries and as high as possible capacity. I dismantled the accupack and saw there where 8 quandrangle cells of 1,2V in it in series. Unfortenately I saw no way to build 8 round batteries in the pack, so I had to find another solution. In the Netherlands  you pay about 50 euro for this accupack ex. postage. Searching on eBay I found some that were slightly cheaper here in Europe. Then I found a few very cheap ones in CA, USA they seem to be not original 9,6V 700mAh NiMh and I bought 2 of them including postage for about 45 euro. In about 2 weeks I got them here and immidiatly found that they were a bit lighter in weight then the original one. So, I didn't trust it too much and did test one to see if capacity is allright. The test was with a 12V 5W lightbulb which does use 300mA at 9,6V. In theory it would last 2,5 hour, but after 2 hours the voltage dropped very fast to 5V.Not bad actually for a cheap accupack. I think it does as good as the orginal one which is specified as 650mA. And I can use my Alinco HT again now...

Predicting propagation is just like predicting the weather...

I had a sked with TI2/NA7U Casey today on 17m PSK at 13:00UTC as I made a prediction with VOACAP to see what the best time would be. But predicting the propagation is just like predicting the weather, you have to be incredible lucky on these kind of distances to make good sked. Anyway, no TI better luck another time. I've made some nice QSOs though from Kazakhstan till USA and especially enjoyed the non macro QSOs with some OM from the USA, one of them K1JDP Bill even told me he was 97 years of age. Incredible doing some PSK with a computer at that age. When I am that old who tells what is a populair mode at that time?
All QSOs were made with 25W from the Icom and the horizontal loop.

Other DX and finally 9L5MS

Since my XYL, my little daughter and I were all ill last few days I stayed home for a few days. Due to this I could get on the radio at times I normally never have time for it. So I worked 9L5MS finally on 17m + 12m CW and 15m SSB verified in their online logbook. It took me lot of effort as I didn't feel too well and propagation between Sierra Leone and my QTH seem not to be improving at all. But at least I can apply for a QSL and the certificate now as I worked all their 3 DXpeditions last few years. Although I only receive weak signals from that part of Africa, other parts are very strong. Last couple of days I worked 5M2TT (Liberia) 15m, 5N7M (Nigeria) 12m, TJ3AY (Cameroon) 12m and ZS1NL (RSA) 10m all with SSB. Besides Africa there was some other lucky DX at greyline time: 9M2TO (West Malaysia) 17m, XV2RZ (Vietnam) 20m and 17m and 8R1Z (Guyana) on 12m of course all in SSB and still with my horizontal loop/vertical. It has been a long time I managed to make so many nice DX contacts within a short time. Now, with all the DX luck on he radio we hope to get healthy soon again.

Other ways to view my blog

Blogger announced that blogs can now be viewed in a dynamic way. It only works in the newer browsers. I checked Chrome and all dynamic views work excellent. Great for those reading my blog with a tablet PC or on TV.

The hunt for 9L5MS and more DX

Well, it has been a couple of days ago I wrote something in this blog. Actually I would like to use my time elsewhere. And it's always difficult to choose. Lately I'm very busy at the job and in the garden and since the weather is excellent it will continue like that. Though I would like to make at least one QSO with the dutch guys in Sierra Leone 9L5MS. Till now they were still waiting for their antennas and other materials, so they were only QRV with verticals and 100W. I kept an eye on the cluster, but till now I was only lucky to hear hem once very weak at 17m CW. I hope to get them next week. Since I checked the radio once and a while to see if I could hear them,  I worked some other nice DX with some luck in between. They say: You have to be there to work the DX. And it's true, if you're not on the radio listening you cannot contact anything. I worked D2AM (Angola) on 17 and 12m, 4S7DXG (Sri Lanka) on 17 and 20m and TJ3AY (Cameroon) on 10m. All last week, you have to imagine if I attend the radio it is most of the time 10 minutes to check the bands so if I hear something I have to be really fast and lucky to make a QSO. Last week I received the cards for my contact with the Galapagos Islands on 20m RTTY and 80m SSB.

Long delayed echoes again

I thought to have some nice QSOs on 80m with my horizontal loop last evening just before I will dismantle it. Choosing JT65A with QRP to see how that should work out. I gave a couple of CQ shouts with 0,5W but no replies, strange. I noticed something else in the receiving period: I saw my own CQ just a little off the normal time sync, I thought someone was playing a joke on me. So, I tried again and saw it again appearing on my screen. Then my mind crossed something I experienced on 11m and happened to a German station a few months ago on 40m. Long delayed echoes, could it be on 80m? Never heard about it, but a quick google brought me to long delayed echoes on wikepedia. So, just to be shure some fool wouldn't calling me with my own call I choose another frequency outside the normal JT65A one. And yes, again I saw my own CQ appearing. So, I don't know if anyone tried or experienced this before, I tried to get back to my own call. And yes, I did make a QSO with myself see the prove on the screenshot. This is probabely the first delayed echo QSO ever on 80m, or does someone else claim this first? I would be happy to know. Then....when I was thinking about a posting in this weblog I noticed about 10 minutes later I saw myself again. And not only my CQ but the entire QSO between me and me. This was really a crazy experience. Trying to do this in SSB didn't brought me any results. Anyone exprienced the same thing last night?
