Radioshack update 5 - Trash parts -

Not being busy with radio much lately. I try to finish the new shack a.s.a.p.  Time to do small chores. Painting and decorating is almost done. I need to finish electricity and some make some panels for the side walls. Unfortenately I'm out of money, so was desperately seeking for some trash parts. I still have some old paint and wood and found some used panels. So far I'm doing fine and still continue to build.

PACC 2013 token

Always nice to receive the PACC token. No prize this year, but that is not really important. Participating would be enough for me. At least I always try to do better as last year. So I took a look at the results this year and see that although I finished 5th the score is better as last year. Fault percentage did rise 1 percent, so that's what I should work on. If you look at the winner, his fault percentage was only 5%. Most made fault I think is that a few do log me as PA4BAS or PA4BES. For some reason the A and E is going to be switched and sometimes it takes a lot of time and persuasion to convince the opposite station the call is logged wrong. After all I had exactly 5000 points more as 2012 after evaluation. Although I think this score is almost the max. I can make with the setup right now I will still try to improve. Hopefully setting up te permanent radioshack will help me with that.

2013 score
2012 score

PESK Holland

No, it's not a new PSK mode! PESK is the callsign of the 60 year old tugboat "Holland" which is very well known on the Island of Terschelling. As you readers know my XYL and I visited Terschelling a couple of weeks ago and stayed in a B&B called "de Holland" named after the ship. Since there where a couple of paintings of the ship hanging in the pension my eye of course went to the HF antenna. Well, back home I found a youtube video of the ship from last year, when I viewed the shot (8:36) made in the radioroom I spotted a Elecraft KX3 on the table. So searching for amateurradio and tugboat Holland it soon directed me to PA3RON. Ron is a volunteer radio-officer (spark) aboard the ship. Probabely the radio was his. Unfortenately till now I didn't get a answer on my e-mail to him. So, I am interested in the antenna's and the search goes on. Even in the time of the multi information provider internet not everything can be found, although it's just what you're looking for. Sometimes the information can be found at obscure sites, sometimes the description is completely different. Anyway, of course I found the official website from tugboat "Holland", it does not have much info about the radio equipment or antenna's used. Then I came across a unofficial site from one of the volunteers Hans. Hans was a technician at the dutch airforce before retirement and restored some of the old radio equipment at the ship. Hans made a very interesting website about the "Holland" which tells a lot more then the official site. Especially about the radioroom which has my interest of course! Well, I send an e-mail to Hans to get some more info about the antennas. But Hans could not tell me anything other then the manufacturer which was probabely "Ships Services" a company like "Radio Holland".  I cannot find anything about this company at all. Later he sent me some pictures of the antennasystem from when the ship was in service and the setup now. I got permission to publish them here. May be someone can tell some more about the use of so many different HF wire antennas on a ship. As far as I can see on the pictures the antenna system consists both 2 loop receiving antennas and a kind of longwire or may be more to transmit? A similair antenna system can be found on the tugboat "Elbe".

WSPRing today

Since Paul PC4T was received by a few new DXCC on WSPR I decided to go WSPRing again today. I have a day off as I need to work on Saturday. So while doing the garden and hopefully some work in the new shack the radio is trying to push my 1 Watt signals on the airwaves. Hopefully I can write down some new DXCC in my WSPR log.

QRT from 14:45 - 16:30 UTC due to a thunderstorm.

Results: no new all band DXCC, only 2 new ones for 20m. My signal didn't bounce in the right direction today. You can't always have all the luck. Next time better...

Volgende keer beter...

From the mobile today

Working on the new shack gives some unexpected hobby possebilities. I had to bring some tools from the job we need to work with this weekend and again I could not hold them on my bicycle. So, I had my FT817 with me in the car again. At lunchbreak I first tried for 10m, I received ZD7FT from St.Helena very well. But the pile-up was huge and I tried my luck on 12m, no response after several CQ calls. Then I tuned over 20, 17 and 15m. It was clear there was some kind of black out. There was not much activity at all, not much QRM either. But at last I worked AO1WED with my QRP mobile station on 15m and got a report 5/7. Even with bad propagation the converted DV27 is still doing the job!

Dus weer mijn FT817 meegenomen. Even 20, 17 en 15m beluisterd.

Mobile antennas, one has to go!

I had to go to the job with the car today as I need some hardware for the new shack that I couldn't take with the bicycle. I took the FT817 with me in case I had some spare time at lunchbreak. Well, I did have about 15 minutes and first tried 10m which was absolutely dead. I converted the antenna to 15m and did hear some stations calling. Then I heard SU9AF in pile-up, that would be a great catch. I slowly drove around a little at the jobs terrain to find a good DX spot and when the meter came up I called a couple of times and made the contact to Egypt. Well, it convinces me again that my homemade converted DV27 does an outstanding job. So, compare it on the photo, the black one is the multiranger 200 the long one is the converted DV27 both set for 20m. It's almost impossible to drive with these antennas on the roof of your car, except if you drive not over 50 km/h. Driving while DXing is dangerous anyway! Performance of the DV27 is much better, I think it has to do with the coil which is in the center. Guess which one has to go?

Contest University

Via PD2R I came across a very interesting link from Icom America on youtube. It's a list of videos shot at the Dayton event in USA. Not only interesting for contesters but for everyone that wants to build a good station. Enjoy!
