2013 highlights, 2014 goals

Like every year it's a tradition to review some of the highlights of past year and look at the goals of the new year. The highlights of 2013 begun with the Castles On The Air activation Menkemaborg PA-00007 with as a double highlight the contact with W1OW from the mobile with QRP 5W, remarkable! After that I scored a little higher in the PACC contest, PE1BVQ Hans his visit and building the new radioshack which is finished this year. The visit to the lightship Borkumriff in the Eemshaven en it's clubstation DL0BRF with the friendly German operators on board was a true highlight. The QSO with TN2MS from Congo that was just made in time, I really tried hard for that DXpedition something I will remember for years like I made the QSO yesterday and already received the confirmation. Of course I don't forget the radio activities from Schiermonnikoog Island and the meeting with Rob PD9R. Did I forget something? Well, it was a very interesting year from a radio point of view. The goals from 2013 have been fullfilled. I worked at least 6 ATNO's (All Time New Ones) DXCC en indeed like expected most of them when in contest. I've been active portable and mobile many times this year and did more with digital modes then last year although it is still less as expected. The new radioshack was ready in summer though to get everything like I wished took some time. The result is there, I have a real radioshack again. The goals for 2014: I hope to obtain a higher score in the PACC like I always do. I would like to work some new DXCC, may be a little more WSPR activity. I'm thinking of heating the soldering iron to finally build some of the projects I still have, it has been 10 years ago since I build anything with soldering electronics. The antennamast is still down in the garden for 5 years now, I don't want to think of getting it up again as there are so many other things to do in and around the house. May be that's a good goal for 2015! I wish everyone a very good turn of the year and a prosperous and healthy 2014.

JT modes and 2013 comparisation graphs

Since WSJT-X is finally working the correct way I've been very active with both JT65A and JT9-1. It's incredible what you encounter on the bands that way. USA on 80m difficult? Not with JT modes, it's possible to work them in the evening and in the morning. I worked PY4ZO (Brazil) and YV5OF (Venezuela) on 40m. I even saw HK1 on 80m and made a QSO with TI2HAS (Costa Rica) on 30m. Although the last one was difficult and I'm not shure if he received my report. 30m can be very unpredictable and so it was this morning. Sometimes the band was full with signals while 2 minutes later nothing could be heard, sometimes the other way around. I never saw any "no decode" anymore and the frustration I had in previous JT sessions this year is gone. I'm a happy WSJT-X user now!

Well, last year I made some comparistion graphs. I thought to do it again to get a overview of 2013. The first graph is the amount of QSOs from clublog's timeline. It shows a increasing number of QSOs overall. The second graph is the number of QSOs I made per mode. It is clear that I really get into JT modes, it has a DX potential I think although it costs a lot of time to complete a single QSO.

The third graph shows the number of QSOs per month.Totallly different from ast year as surprisingly I made most of the QSOs from my new shack in October during the CQWW. Note that the graphs except the clublog one are only from my base log. I didn't count the mobile and portable operations.

TN2MS QSL card received

I received the card from the DX contact of the year 2013 for me. Not only because it was a new DXCC for me but it was also the 4th time I worked a Mercy Ships DXpedition. It was a very difficult one for me as the DXpedition could only be heard at times that I was at work. I tried everything I could and even tried mobile in my lunchbreak. In the end I worked them on a morning in the weekend on 12m SSB. They did a great job and I think this is the only DXpedition that is worth additional money to sponsor the Mercy Ships work.

Radioshack update 10 - Ready to go!

So far the new radioshack is ready for use. There are always small things that have to be changed, it will always stay like that. But I think I have it now like I did have in mind when we moved to this house more then 5 years ago. I already did some contests from the new shack and the equipment did fine. I got my books and old stuff from previous shacks with me and still have room for more. I got my old "nineties" stereo gear back in the shack and can listen fine music while doing digital contests. I got a place to repair or solder projects. I got my second monitor working, something I wanted for years. And just for fun, the main monitor is touch screen, not really need it but it is a bit futuristic I think. Well, I hope I will enjoy the new shack for years to come.

Happy holidays?

Why happy holidays I ask myself. Many people have 2 weeks off the job, school or whatever. Ok, most of us have the 2 christmas days off if you call that holiday. Anyway, since even more then 100 supermarkets here in the Netherlands are open 1st christmas day you hardly can call this a holiday. I've been to the supermarket just to buy some milk and bread. No special food for us besides some christmas cookies. If you see how many people there are that buy there christmas food, wow....like they will not be able to buy food for the next 2 weeks! Enough about it, here is my special christmas movie for you. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Found the JT culprit

After some experiments I think I found the culprit, it was primairely my own stupid fault. I tried closing DM780 at first, could be the soundcard problem related to it. It did help a little but still I got NO DECODE back from some stations. I was not satisfied at all and thought just to replace the soundcard for a cheap USB plug-in to see if it would help. Strange enough I plugged it it but it was not found. Trying to find it in the configuration from WSJT-X gave me a list of soundcard possebilities, normally I use just the normal soundcard configuration. But now I saw I could choose directX as well. Stupid as I never thought of choosing another! I thought installing the latest directX drivers would be enough. I have the idea the signal is crystalclear now and most important I haven't see any NO DECODE transmissions anymore from opposite stations. See list at the right, never made that many QSO's in a short time on relative difficult bands.

VERON division league succes!

"The ARRL of the Netherlands is called the VERON. The organization is grouped into different regions. Every region has its own members. To promote the participation of contests the VERON does organize a division league between the different regions. When you participated in a contest, you submit your Q’s on a website and the every year there is a overall winner but also a region winner."

While reading this on PA1JIM's blog about the VERON division league I just thought what is the overall result of our division. Our division took a lot of effort with the help of top contester and headman PA4PS Peter we did the best we could. Especially the last few weeks we were all very active in different contests to gather points and aimed for a place as high as possible. Finally we did catch up several other divisions and reached 13th place overall. PA4PS did a good job finishing first of our division. PI4H our clubstation primarily runned by PA4PS was second and finally I became 3rd.

VERON-afdelingscompetitie 2013
Afdeling Hunsingo
Afdelings Resultaat in de VERON Competitie.

1.   PA4PS         426        59.4 %
2.   PI4H            133        18.5 %
3.   PE4BAS        86         12.0 %
4.   PD1T             28          3.9 %
5.   PD2TW         14          1.9 %
6.   PD4MK          9           1.2 %
7.   PA2N              9           1.2 %
8.   PE1DUG         7           0.9 %
9.   PA3FUJ          4           0.5 %

Totaal score:      716

NO DECODE

I had the opportunity to be on 10m and 12m once again at Monday. Tried several modes and made some contacts. As you can see on the map many stations received my signal. Very nice, but I have a problem, I don't know if I'm the only one but strange enough some stations I call don't decode me although it is obvious they see my signal in the waterfall as after many tries they send "NO DECODE".. This happens to me almost all the time with JT65 and JT9 and is very frustrating. Strange enough I am received, see the map! I remember an issue with clicking noise in the signal, but monitoring my own signal I don't hear anything different from other signals. Why do some decode me without any problem and others not? This puzzles me...anyone ideas?

Update: It seems I had this problem before in April this year I wrote about it here: http://pe4bas.blogspot.nl/2013/05/clicking-noise-in-jt-9.html
Still have no solution. So far I think I had just bad luck to be on the same frequency with another calling station all the time. Very frustrating... If possible I'll do some experiments to find the problem.

10m ARRL contest review

Normally when I got time for the hobby it's still dark or it's already dark and so there are no conditions on 10m. With the ARRL 10m contest on this weekend this is my chance to work some DX on my favorite band. All available time was spend in the ARRL 10m contest this Sunday. I wish I could spend a couple of hours more, but in the end together with the hour QRP from the car at Saturday I think I participate for about 4 hours. I only did SSB and luckely there was enough to contact. I managed to make 122 QSOs at the end. Actually some of the DX surprised me and some were too busy with the pile-up. For instance V55V was a constant 5/8 here the whole time but I didn't manage to get through. I worked fellow blogger Franki OQ5M for the first time on backscatter with a lot of echo here, it was a difficult contact but we managed to exchange the numbers. I shot a video from his signal (first take), it was really that hard and it's amazing what a human ear & brain can filter out when experienced. Second take is Franki's signal in the afternoon which was a lot better and without echo. Sorry for the video quality, my mobile phone is not a good camera.

More DX: QRP from the car: A61ZX (UAE), HI3CC (Dominican Rep.), KP4EU (Puerto Rico)
From base: D4C (Cape Verde), VK2GGC (Australia), 8P2K (Barbados), PT3T (Brazil), NP2X (US Virgin Isl.), XE3/K5ENS (Mexico)*, ZF1A (Cayman Isl.)*, K0RF (Colorado, USA)*

* appear in the video

Comparisation vertical and horizontal loop antenna

Calling PSK31, JT9 and finally JT65 with 25W on a death 30m (10.14 MHz) this evening. Death? Not really, just no station around. Worldwide contacts are still possible. First 2 spots from VK3AMA and VK2AJF were transmitted with the vertical. Second 2 spots were transmitted with the 80m horizontal loop. Not much difference, the vertical slightly better on DX. I went to 160m later on with the vertical. A very busy band tonight on digital.

Vanavond even een roepje gedaan met PSK31, JT9 en uiteindelijk JT65 met 25W op een dode 30m (10,14 MHz) band. Dood?

10m contest rehearsal

It makes the car 3 times rise in height
One of my favorite contests, the 10m ARRL contest, is this weekend. Unfortenately I have to beon the job. So Saturday participation is limited to the lunchbreak. As I want to make as many QSOs as possible I tried to do a rehearsal today. I got the crazy idea to bring the glassfiber pole with me and attach a endfed to it yesterday. But some tests revealed that the wire used was not resonant enough with the LC tuning box I made and I have no time to change things. So, I found an old complete 1/4 wave CB mobile antenna somewhere in the corner of my garage and today I tuned the SWR as good as possible for 28 MHz. I just had time enough to make a short QSO with RT110RAEM and RY7G who were both 5/9 and 5/8 on my side. Listening around I received HK3C with 5/5 and VK6PH from Perth with 5/7. I think if I had some time I would probabely had a chance to work them with my QRP 5W from the car. I don't know if this 1/4 wave mobile whip is better as my homemade PE4BAS mobile antenna? In theory it should be more effective compared to a antenna with a coil. At least I will try to make the best of it tomorrow at lunchbreak. So, if you make contact with me Saturday, remember I'm mobile and QRP!

Update 14-12-2013: Worked 26 stations in my lunchbreak. Best DX was A61ZX from UAE and KP4EU from Puerto Rico. Heard VR2XMT and 3W1T both with 5/8 QSB but pile-up was too big to get through. Just before going home this afternoon, parking at the same spot as on the photo, I made the best DX of the day with Dominican Republic HI3CC. Thanks Tino! Good ears! Counting 27 now.

Radioshack update 9 - It has been a long time...

Ground rods + equipment to drill them into the ground.
It has been September that I last updated my shack building progress. Actually there are some things that are not ready. In the mean time I already had to do the contests I do every year. So progress was not really made, but I was thinking about it at least. I decided that this weekend I should do the last things to finish the shack so far. That means finishing the safety ground system, label the various drawers and maps and attaching the plexiglass windows to form extra insulation. Slowly the new shack in growing to what I had in mind for it.

Luckely there seems to be no RFI into the equipment so a "RF earth" or potentential equalization of the equipment like I wrote about before is not needed. I followed the advise from W8JI and did not use any ferrite chokes on any coax, supply or audio cable to the radio. I also soldered the braid to the outside of all PL connectors to get a best connection. That's something I never did before, I only soldered the core at the center pin and assumed folding back the braid and turn it into the connector with force was good enough. I think 90% of connections like this will be good enough, but if one fails you could probabely have a hard to find problem with RFI somewhere. The groundrod outside is connected with a big welding cable (25mm2) to the patch panel I made at the coax cable entrance. It's just inside the house and it would be better to have it outside. But in that case I would need a watertight box outside on the wall, that wasn't a option. It would be to difficult when I or my XYL had to unplug everything in case of lightning. When my new antennamast is installed I will make a better lightning protection at the base of the mast. For now this is better as nothing at all. Since I do not use the mains earthing system for my radio equipment I feel a little saver now.

I labelled various drawers and maps I use to storage various things. I really need it this way as I'm too chaotic to remember in which drawer or map I stored things in. I found a lot of stuff I don't use anymore and already selled some items. I also threw things away as sometimes you really need to say goodbye to old things.

The insulation of the shack is very good. Till now I used little to no heat from the small electrical heater. If I leave the computer and radio on temperature will rise 2-5 degrees depending on time and temperature outside. It hasn't been below 10 degrees yet and if you don't stay too long in the shack a temperature just above 15 degrees Celsius is warm enough. If I use the electrical heater (800W) I can get it 18 degrees C in about half a hour, the equipment will hold the temperature equal to that after. I installed extra plexiglass at the side windows which are single layered. Hopefully that will add a extra insulation when it's getting really cold in January-February.

Believe it or not. Besides all this work I still had time to make 25 QSOs in the TARA RTTY contest and 100 QSOs in the EPC Ukraine PSK63 DX contest. Didn't sleep much this weekend though ;-).

Labeled drawers

New tube for the mobile antenna

KD8RTT Tony made a similair antenna storage tube as I did a while ago. Although I used a carton tube which cannot withstand moisture, the tube broke last week. So I decided to copy Tony's idea and used a PVC pipe this time. I think this one will hold a lot better when stored in the car at different circumstances. I plan to use the mobile setup again in the 10m ARRL contest as I am on the job that weekend. I hope to make some QSO's from the car at lunchbreak. In the mean time most of the storm has gone. There seems to be no damage at the base antennas. I watched the glasfiber top tubes this morning when it started to get light, they bend nicely in the wind. I think they will be stronger then the aluminium tube I used before.

Another heavy storm approaching

Another heavy storm (Xaver) is approaching and will be very strong from 13:00 UTC. It will be there for about 24 hours.  I hope the repairs I made on the antennamast (glasfiber poles) will hold. This will defenitely be the big test. On the internet there are rumours that the 160m beam at radio Arcala (OH8X) has collapsed by a storm a while ago. Till now I cannot find anything about it yet.

Update: My XYL called me when still on the job. The antennamast was bend again she told me. When I finally got home it did indeed bend but that was because one of the radial support wires was broken. I could fix it easily.

The results of the WSPR test

Comparisation, click to view larger
Not unexpecting results on WSPR 10m last monday. The beam with twice the height of the vertical is far superior. Both verticals were almost equal. Unique spots count: PA4PS 32, PA1SDB 12 and PE4BAS 14. So if you really want to be a serious DXer or a contester you really need a directional antenna I think. It really is a miracle I make some DX at all and my contest scores are not that bad if you compare it to a station with a directional antenna. PA1SDB had problems to get out of Europe but in the end some decend spots were made by a few in the USA. I had only one station from Australia that spotted me in the morning, wheras PA4PS had a whole cluster of VK's that spotted him. A large difference. All of us did agree propagation was not at it's best. Hopefully it will improve before the ARRL 10m contest is on.

PA1SDB vertical

WSPR comparisation test

Just made....lowest scale.
Peter PA4PS, Peter PA1SDB and I will do a test today. Not a contest but just a comparisation test on WSPR. Settings WSPR with 500mW on 35% TX time on 10m from about 08:00 UTC till 20:00 UTC. PA4PS will use a FB33 beam on about 18m AGL, PA1SDB is using a Solarcon A99 CB antenna on 5 mtr AGL. I will use my homemade multiband vertical on 9m AGL. We are in the same area but living in different locations. It would be interesting to see what PA4PS will reach with 500mW on the beam compared to the verticals from the others.

Live material can be found on the WSPR database

Bureau QSL

As always visiting the local radio club brings me a pile of paper QSL cards. I published some of the nice ones on my QSL gallery. I was surprised to find a QSL from my most loyal reader PE1BVQ Hans and fellow blogger PH0NO Lars in the pile. Both from our first phone QSO's. Thanks guys and a QSL is going your ways via bureau.

Interesting HAM radio club meeting

Romantic Radio....
We had a very nice and interesting radiomeeting from our local radioclub last Friday evening. Well known DX operator PE5T Cees did a talk about the emergency transmitter of AM station radio Seagull which he designed and built. Very interesting and a eyeopener as I aways had a very romantic view on those old "pirate" like ship transmitting stations. In fact the transmitter is not on the ship but just on a piece of land together with a T-antenna, tuner and computer/internet. I think the ship is more like a commercial thing, like a logo. Although in case of emergency it is possible to use the ships antennamast. The transmitter is from the brand Blyth, a brand that is not making them anymore. There is not much info to be find about these transmitters. The music programs are made by several DJs just at their homes and then uploaded to the central computer which is doing the job by playing them at the right time together with the news and commercials. Nothing romantic about it....Just to put it in short terms, Cees was asked  to build a emergency transmitter in case the Blythe would have problems. He didn't want to use expensive components and the system should be 80% efficient. After some prototypes he finally bought a Behringer NU3000 PWM audio amplifier which powered a couple of FETs which transmit on MW AM with the help of a DDS. Well, that is very shortly formulated and probabely not entirely right. Unfortenatly my knowledge on the subject is not good enough, but it is very interesting though. If you ever have a chance to get to a meeting with PE5T  about this subject I can recommend it. Well it was a interesting evening and so there were some well known radio amateurs as well. Some of them not seen for a long time, some of them met in real life for the first time. That was the case with fellowblogger PA0O Jaap who I only talked to on air so far.

400W carrier, 1600W PEP

Making a second floor shack ground

As mentioned before I once made a shack ground before in our previous house. If I think it over and compare it to the knowledge W8JI shares with us I probabely did not bad. On the picture you see my main ground buss directly behind the antennatuner and bonded with it by a large groundstrap. The red wires are bonded with all radio equipment, the green/yellow wire is the counterpoise, the black cable is very large welding cable going to the groundrod. The only thing I did wrong might be that the red cables are too long, I should have made a wider ground buss just below all the equipment to connect it to.

Just to be clear, the groundsystem I want to install is to minimize RF in the shack the groundsystem outside to the groundrod is only for AC mains safety and discharge of static during a thunderstorm when I disconnect all antenna cables. The type of groundsystem or counterpoise system I would want to install (if needed) will make the entire room, including the operator, "rise" in voltage to match the equipment chassis voltages. It also disperses or spreads the current and voltage around, reducing intensity of localized electric and magnetic fields. The idea is described at the website of W8JI and is worth trying. I don't know if the setup of my radio and computer will suffer from any RF disturbance in my new shack yet. Of course I will first try without all this and install this groundsystem if I encounter any problems.
