Now this is what I call a futuristic radio

Regular readers know that I wrote something about the radio of the future, or what I expect from it. Well, the new Icom IC-7100 is on it's way to that. At least it has touch screen and many more features like D-Star. It seems to be the new mobile radio and the follow up of the populair IC-706 and IC-7000. I wonder why they didn't use a full color TFT display. But it could be that this is just a prototype. I think it will take some years before we will have radios that only have touchscreen operation like a iphone. Time will tell.

Lezers die hier regelmatig komen weten dat ik een tijdje terug iets schreef over de radio van de toekomst, of in ieder geval wat ik ervan verwacht. Deze nieuwe Icom IC-7100 is hard op weg naar datgene. Het heeft een aanraakscherm en nog veel meer extra's zoals D-Star. Het lijkt er op dat dit de opvolger moet zijn voor de populaire IC-706 en de IC-7000. Waarom ze geen echt kleuren TFT scherm gebruiken is mij een vraagteken. Maar het kan zijn dat dit alleen nog maar een prototype is. Ik denk dat het nog wel een paar jaar duurt voordat we radios hebben die alleen nog maar met aanraakscherm werken zoals een iphone. De tijd zal het leren.

Checking some COTA/WCA PA

Since Lars PH0NO did activate some castles my wish to do a activation myself is there. You can find some interesting info on his website regarding the Castles On The Air and World Castles Award worldwide and in the Netherlands. I helped Lars to update and choose the right castles in my province. So far we decided to choose 10. Castles in this area are called "borgen" and are not really the castles you imagine from stories about knights. Anyway, the nice thing is that my job area is within 1 km from one of the "castles" called Menkemaborg and so I would have the chance to activate it when having my lunch break. Something I will try in the future.

But yesterday afternoon together with my XYL I was visiting two of the "castles" on the list checking them out. Both have nice parking lots and are ideal to activate in the PA-COTA/WCA program. We visited the Allersmaborg first and had a nice walk around it. I couldn't make clear photos from the front as there were visitors and I don't like them on photos at my blog. Then we drove to another one called Piloersemaborg and had a nice walk aroundit as well. Finally we visited the remains of a big monastery in Aduard. At the museum we had a very interesting private tour with stories about the history of the cistercian monks that lived and ruled here for 400 years from 1100-1500. A well spend afternoon.

Toen Lars PH0NO begon met het aktiveren van kastelen is mijn interesse gewekt om dat zelf ook eens te doen. Je kan op zijn website interessante informatie vinden over het Nederlandse en wereldwijde Castle On The Air en World Castle Award programma. Ik heb Lars geholpen met info over de kastelen of "borgen" in de provincie Groningen. Uiteindelijk hebben we 10 borgen gekozen die redelijk voldoen aan de eisen van het programma. Het leuke is dat de Menkemaborg binnen 1 km van mijn werk staat en dus zou ik deze aardig goed kunnen activeren in mijn lunchpauze, dat zal ik ook zeker gaan doen in de toekomst.

Gisterenmiddag zijn mijn XYL en ik op pad gegaan om 2 borgen op de lijst de Allersmaborg en de Piloersemaborg van dichtbij te bekijken. En natuurlijk keek ik speciaal naar mogelijkheden voor een aktivatie. Bij beide borgen is een ruime parkeerplaats en goede mogelijkheid voor een aktivatie in het PA-COTA/WCA programma. We hebben de Allersmaborg eerst bezocht en zijn er even omheen gelopen. Omdat er bezoekers waren heb ik de borg niet goed van voren kunnen fotograferen. Daarna reden we door naar de Piloersemaborg, ook daar zijn we omheen gelopen. Beide borgen zijn net zomaar toegankelijk. Als afsluiting van de middag zijn we naar het Kloostermuseum in Aduard gereden waar we een rondleiding kregen met veel informatie over het grote klooster dat daar stond waar de cisterciënzer monniken de macht hadden van ongeveer 1100-1500. Zeer de moeite waard. En goed bestede middag.

Less blogging & radio

I hope Franki ON5ZO does not mind I refer to what he wrote in his blog:

I have a job, I have a family, I have household duties. When these three are served and satisfied all my remaining time is spent on ham radio and contesting in one way or another. Some watch football, others collect stamps.

That counts for me too. And there are times this takes so much time and effort there is no or not much left for a hobby. I'm trying to make some time to finish the endfed experiment but till now I didn't succeed.
