My 21 year old Icom IC-706 MKIIG probabely has a PLL problem. That will say I did read similair problems on several sites and forums according this problem. Especially when the radio is cold after a few minutes SSB and CW is sounding raspy and noisy, this occurs from about 7 MHz and up. When it occurs I cannot transmit on 15m and 17m either. Most of the time it is ok when I transmit for a carrier for a few minutes to warm up the radio. Sometimes transmitting for a few seconds on 160m solves the problem as well. Could there be a simple solution? Something I can do myself?

https://hamradioservice.nl/. He told me it is definitely a PLL problem and he is able to fix it.
However, the radio is 21 years old. I don't want to spend much money to fix it since I'm saving for a nice and shiny Icom IC-7300. It is a difficult choice what to do since I can still use my IC-706 as soon as it is warmed up. It is only the annoyance when starting up the station actually.
I found a 22 year old brochure from the Icom IC-706 MKIIG when it was just new. Wow, it was my dream radio those days. Just like the IC-7300 is now.

Hallo Bas, voor electronica is 21 jaar behoorlijk oud. Vooral Elco's gaan als eerste lekken. De IC-706 MK2G had ik graag willen hebben, maar toen ik er voor wilde gaan was ie al uit productie. De IC-7300 lonkt ook nog steeds. 73 Paul
Balen Bas, dat je oude vertrouwde IC706 kuren begint te vertonen. Was hij maar opgebouwd zoals de Yaesu FT221 en de FT225. Voordeel bij deze sets is dat het modulair is opgebouwd en gemakkelijk te repareren is. Gelukkig komt dat weinig voor maar bij de modernere apparaten wordt het een stuk moeilijker om zelf de reparatie uit te voeren. Jammer Bas maar gewoon effe volhouden. Sterkte ermee. 73 Hans, PE1BVQ
Hallo Paul, voor mij was het echt een droom destijds die uiteindelijk uitkwam. Heb er echt jaren voor gespaard net zoals nu voor de IC-7300. Alleen was de IC-706 destijds echt wel een stuk duurder als de IC-7300. We sparen nog even door want ook mijn headset is door de jaren heen helemaal versleten. Dus nieuwe set ook direct nieuwe headset.Komt uiteindelijk wel goed hoop ik. En ondertussen kan ik met wat happeren toch de IC-706 nog wel gebruiken. 73, Bas
Hallo Hans, ik heb het al verbeterd....:-) Ach, ik heb al meer problemen gehad met de IC-706. Het is wel te repareren. Het zijn gewoon dingen die na verloop van tijd gebreken gaan vertonen. Dit is een bekende kwaal en ik ben zeker niet de eerste die het heeft. Maar je moet je af gaan vragen of het nog de moeite waar dis voor een oude radio. Ik besteed het geld liever aan een nieuwe radio en kan daarna wel een kijken of ik de IC-706 laat repareren. Kan hem nog steeds gebruiken. 73, Bas
