Some QRP prior to the PACC

Some of you probabely noticed the QSO's I made on RTTY in the small logbook app on the right of my blog. They are made with QRP 5W in the CQWW WPX RTTY contest prior to the PACC contest. I thought I just try 10m to be shure that the HB9VC did ok. Well I think it did. I was specifically looking for other QRP stations and DX. The HB9CV did help a lot in the PACC contest. Although 10m wasn't that good I had no problems working stations inside the Netherlands this time. I even did some nice DX on 10m to Amsterdam Isl, Reunion Isl, Sao Tome and Principe, Brazil, Thailand, USA, Puerto Rico and Bonaire. More about the PACC results later as I have to tidy up the log a bit.

Logged PJ4NX Peter on 4 bands !! Unfortenately not counting
for multipliers, more about that later...

PACC 2014 what's happening so far...

Tired but going strong!
I write this at the time that I call CQ in the middle of the night and only 1 station per 10 minutes is max. rate. My radio is glowing hot and it's a miracle the old beast is still working. I lost a lot of time at the start as suddenly I had RF in both headset and voicekeyer. It took me a hour to solve the problem. It was a faulty coax cable between the radio and the tuner. Till now I made 441 QSOs with 120 multipliers and that is not so bad considering the problems I had. It seems to be I was lucky as I had a 2 hour pile-up on 80m with rates from about 89/h. I also worked FT5ZM again on 10m just to be shure and may be for a multiplier in the contest, and again I got him within 2 calls. Propagation was not really good on 10m I think, didn't make that many QSOs there. I also worked 2 ATNO DXCC S9TF Sao Tome & Principe on 10m and the German Antarctic station DP1POL on 20m. Both probabely not counting in the contest but I don't care. Working new DXCCs is number one, contest is on second place. They expect a storm windforce 9 tomorrow I hope all antennas are holding.

PACC 2014 preparations

A year has gone by and we are already facing the PACC again. The contest is quite early in the month this year. Propagation is good compared to the solar minimum. It could be possible to have a higher score this year again. 3 weeks ago I encountered a sudden problem having RFI into the deskmike. Strange, nothing has been changed at the station? I found out it the problem came from the voicekeyer I thought. Without the voicekeyer I had no problem at all. Could it be a earthloop? I really don't know but finally creating a earthloop from the mike to the voicekeyer solved the problem. Finally I got a second monitor, a thing I always wished, to keep an eye on the multipliers on other bands. I found a incredible handy DX cluster for that. So, I hope the HB9CV will do the job to score some extra multipliers just like the 40m vertical did last year. Only time will tell. Well, through the years I developed a strategy to get as many QSOs as possible with my setup. But strategy or not you can't predict how propagation is on any band. The only thing that is important is to be there 24 hours and keep ears & eyes open. Listening is at least as important as calling. I made a comparisation from the amount of QSOs I made in 2012/2013. Interesting to see the the lines are almost identical. If anyone wants to sleep best choice would be between 3 and 4 UTC in the morning.
