Thoughts about the PA-beker contest

Luchtstoringen (www.harmjanboven.com)
I translated most of this post, it is about the new rules in the Dutch PA-beker contest held once a year in November and is for Dutch participants only. The contest is not really interesting for DX or international contacts but a challenge for NVIS operation inside the Netherlands. For many Dutch operators it was their first step into contesting. This year we had a change of rules and they are interesting enough to write about.

Be prepared for the PA-beker (PA-cup) contest. New rules this year. That gives new and interesting possebilities as well.

In short:

  • Multiple receivers are allowed
  • Remote station and/or antenna are allowed, as long as it is placed inside the Netherlands
  • CW-skimmer and DX-cluster are allowed, no selfspots of course.
  • Minimum amount of QSOs are 10. So, every call has to be at least 10x in another log as well.
Really progressive rules for a small Dutch only contest. I asked on a Dutch HAM forum if someone would already have plans for these new rules, but didn't get much of a answer. I was curious what other HAMs would do though? Especially rule 1 and 2 of this list are interesting and give a lot of possebilities. We have a couple of very nice webSDR receivers online in the Netherlands. And as far as I know we can now use these remote controlled receivers in this contest. Very nice for someone that lives in the city, but outside in the quiet country it is usable as well. A view on the spectrum and you can instantly see were strong contesters are. It takes some experimenting and testing but I think I could make a advantage out of it. I really plan to use it. Time will tell if it was usefull in the contest. CW-skimmer is the tool for CW contesters of course but I will only participate in SSB. If a DX-cluster is really usefull I don't know, you need to find some friendly contesters that will spot you. But if you really go for the first 3 you probabely don't do that I think. Then the last rule of the list is a fair rule. Lots of HAMs made QSOs with "friends" and "local" stations in the past, only giving them a point so others couldn't get these. With the new rules it is more of a fair play between contesters.

NVIS loop up again!

This is all the equipment I use to make the loop
November is always the month I set up the horizontal loop again to take part in various contests if possible. The stationmanager was a little upset as, like always, it's a ugly thing around her garden. I told her it would take me only one and a half hour, but she told me it would be at least a 2 hour job. Well, of course she was right, it took two and a half hours to finally connect the whole antenna to my tuner. And again, like every year, I am surprised by the boost of signals on 80m this NVIS loop is giving me. It's a big difference, like you hear someone talking in the crowd a few meters next to you and a switch over to someone that is right next to you and talking directly in your ear. I took a view pictures of the event, I was actually planning to make a short video but the weather was too humid to bring out the camera.

3x 7m poles, first one was already up!
It was getting dark, I could just make this photo from the feedpoint with 450 Ohm ladderline.

Remote Antenna Tuner

While cleaning my Garage, part of the new timemanagement project too, I came across some homebrew equipment from the past. Now, I need to throw things away. I had a lot of fun with this project and learned a lot, but probabely never use it again.
I made this antennatuner about 25 years ago from some old parts, the housing was from my grandmas Philips electrical heater that was broken.
So before I will dismantle the thing I will post it here to live in eternity. Short description of how it worked. I had a variable capacitor at the antenna driven by a small cassetteplayer motor. No reduction gear. So a press on the button would swing the thing around completely. I solved the problem with a small NE555 timer, it would give a pulsated voltage to the motor. I could make short pulses and long pulses with the boost button. The whole thing worked fine actually. But only used it for half a year or so.
