IC-706MKIIG, IC-7000, IC-7100 towards the future!

Back in 2011 I wrote a blogpost about the future of a new kind of radio. It was the time that the Elecraft KX3 was just introduced and I made my comment about the old fashioned design of this radio. In this time of Iphones, Ipads and touchscreens you would expect something more modern. Now, I just read a post about the new Icom IC-7100. The Icom IC-7100 does fit in the line IC-706MKIIG and IC-7000. It's a versatile HF/VHF/UHF radio and has a touchscreen...But still old fashioned, look at the out of date LCD screen. This screen was already used at cheap computergames you could hold in your hand in the eighties and nineties of last century. You certainly expect a full colour HD super bright LED touch display. I think Icom designed this model years ago as follow up for the IC-7000. But at that time there was no cheap touchscreen LED display yet. But things evolved, time did go too fast for Icom. And besides that they want to have the first radio with 70MHz capabilities on the market in Europe. No time to loose.... Introduce it and sell it when it's still hot! Could it be a marketing trick. I'll bet Icom is already developing a model like the IC-7000 but then with full color touchscreen, I think there is already a prototype. I guess at the time I bought my Icom IC-706MKIIG there was this prototype IC-7000 with full color display already on the shelf at Icom's design department.

Good morning Bas, yes it is true and if you also look at the high end rigs that are coming out now they are all dials and knobs. It could be that hams still like to spin a dial and turn a knob. Going from a rig to SDR computer type radio it a huge step to some.

Hello Mike, I personally like to spin a tuning dail. But it's something you could ad as a asseccory. Actually what I'm aiming at is more the display that is used in the new IC-7100. LCD was used in the IC-706 as well, but the IC-7000 has colour display. 73, Bas
