Testing the repaired horizontal loop antenna

Well, I didn't have the time to do a proper test with the horizontal loop since I repaired it. So I participated for a short while in the UKDX-RTTY contest, particulairy to test it on 80m. I was calling CQ most of the time since N1MM with MMVARI or MMTTY is not really that easy for S&P when you run the station remote via the internet. Anyway, the main disadvantage with the loop is that I do receive too well. So I did turn on attenuation and 250Hz CW filter and even had to turn RF gain a bit back before I could even see proper signals on the waterfall. So I hope I didn't miss too many that called me, but signals were that strong that it was almost impossible to decode anything. I guess the Icom 706 has not been built or this kind of signal violence. Just for fun I made another small video from the loop. Although it's difficult to catch on film as it is so big, you cannot film the feeling it gives when you're standing in the center of it and take a look around. Anyway it still does the job, on 80m it's a superantenna for reaching stations within a 2000 Km circle. On other bands it still does a reasonable job, but is about the same as my vertical.

73 Paul

73, Bas

Bas,

I have wanted to put up a loop here for a long time. Many AK stations use them and a few even run reflector wires beneath them. Great video and hopefully this year I will be successful in raising mine. My problem is power lines that run directly through my property so it makes it tough in finding a good but safe location. Sounds like it's working good!!

Phil, it's easy to set up but you need at least 450 square meter flat land. Powerlines nearby is not a good thing... Next year I have the countries biggest 3 powerplants 5km away from me, but luckely the lines go somewhere else. A reflector beneath it is an idea, but I read on internet that it only make a difference of about 1dB in the most positive case. Anyway, I'll better try something to find that out...

Hallo Bas, spyware? Neen hoor.
