I participated once again in the Netherlands Telegraphy Club QSO Party. I really looked forward to it and I had a goal to make more QSOs as last time. But unfortunately it didn't happen. At first I listened on 40m but hardly couldn't decode any call. Some stations I heard were OK2BVX, DF4WX, PI4NTC and PA1HAM(?) and PA3GPX. I couldn't hear a name or NTC number all the keying went way too fast for me. After half an hour I moved down to 80m. Had a short exchange with OG0C. Then back to the NTCQP. I finally heard someone with clear and reasonable speed keying, it was PA3CNI. I got his name and NTC number after a couple of overs and decided to make the call on 16 wpm. He did came back on the same speed and it went smoothly. Confident after this one I was looking for another contact. I heard many strong signals but couldn't decode anything out of it. Some use probably mechanic keys and the way the dots and dashes sound is messing my brains up. In the end I think I heard OK1LO, SF6SSC and PA9X but I'm not sure.
I have to say that this was a little discouraging. I wanted this so bad but am not able to simply decode morse behind the simple 5NN after 2 years of every day practice.
But Bas, you make CW QSOs? You did make them from Sweden and others are in your log? Yes, but most of the ones in my log are 5NN contacts. Everyone can make them, even without knowing CW. And in Sweden I was using the decoder built into the (tr)uSDX, it feels like cheating. I really want to do all decoding in my head. It should be possible so I will continue on my difficult path to learn morsecode...

Zoals je zelf al had gemerkt, als je de call goed hebt, geef dan een antwoord op jouw comfortabele snelheid. De meeste ops passen zich wel aan aan jouw snelheid. Zo niet, dan is dat ook voor hun een gemiste kans voor punten in de NTCQP.
En inderdaad, er lijkt alsof er een golf ops is die opeens mechanische sleutels gebruiken en gruwelijke code zenden. Loop ik ook altijd met een boogje omheen, of in een contest als ze echt slecht zijn, negeer ik ze. Anders ben je erg veel onnodige tijd kwijt. Niet netjes, dat weet ik, maar voor mijn eigen zieleheil hard nodig.

Hallo Martin, als ik de call al niet eens kan nemen omdat het vaak onduidelijk is dan hoef ik al niet eens aan te roepen. Gisterenavond meerder stations gehoord die CQNTCDEXX1XXXNTC seinen. Jazeker, ik hoor geen spaties. Ik hoor op 40m 's avonds ook vaak stations die waarschijnlijk met bugs seinen, ze verstaan elkaar blijkbaar wel maar voor mij is het geheimtaal. Maar goed, ik ga het volgense keer wel weer proberen. Uiteindelijk zal het wel beter gaan. 73, Bas
Volhouden Bas! Contesten zijn bij uitstek geschikt om je code te verbeteren. Er is elk weekend wel een contest om te luisteren en misschien een puntje weg te geven.
Good morning Bas, welcome to contesting and all the can frustrate us. What is happening is normal and I have been there. In my case once you mix in band noise, QSB and close by stations reading the sent code becomes a new challenge. Also if the other station is sending by hand and not computer then that adds a whole other ball of wax. When this happens over and over during a contest frustration can set in and then things go downhill even faster. I have gotten to the point were I just power the radio down in frustration and come back later. This is going to happen it does to the most expert of ops.
This live on air practice can be frustrating and humbling but is very important and to be fair you are learning at the same time. It may not be at a fast pace or it could be one step forward and 3 back but it is still moving in the right direction.
Keep it up and slow but sure there will be more forward steps than backward ones.

Hallo Joop, bedankt voor je reactie. Ja hoor ik ga gewoon stug door. Het zal me wel een keer lukken denk ik. Ik hoop van dit soort contesten wat te leren. Maar het valt niet mee. Een "gewone" contest lukt prima. Maar de NTCQP verwacht wel een beetje meer. Dat is de uitdaging voor mij. 73, Bas
Thanks very much Mike for you encouraging words. I will continue learning and I know sometimes we will face difficulties along the path to victory. Some day I will be able to decode CW in my head. It's getting better but it takes just a few milliseconds too long. I guess it's just a matter of training, training and... training. 73, Bas
