Watching the airwaves on 10m

3 LEDs all OK !
Probabely some of the readers of this blog have noticed my on air status message has changed, I finally got my Yaesu FT-817 connected to HRD. I ordered a ZLP CT62 CAT modem for that, since I already use a ZLP MultiFace CAT modem for the Icom. Though the MultiFace modem is capable of connecting to all Icom and Yaesu radios with a CAT connection I needed a separate modem, so I could use the FT-817 somewhere else if I like to. The CT62 was the cheapest solution at this moment. This ZLP modem is supplied with all the cables necessary, just plug & play.  So, I thought that should not be to difficult....wrong. I connected the modem, the power LED was lit. But the PC did not recognize it at all. A bit of quick thinking led me to the conclusion that something was wrong with the supplied USB cable. So I connected the USB cable from the MutiFace modem and the problem was solved.
After reading some blogs on WSPRnet and internet a few operators had the idea to monitor 10m just before the ARRL 10m contest this weekend to get a insight in a eventual opening of the 10m band. So, I join them with 1W out of the FT-817 and see what it usefull info it will bring us. The Yaesu FT-817 is superb for WSPR use I think, compared to my Icom IC-706 it's not getting warm at all. I'm shure that means that it is consuming less power. While reading WSPRnet blogs I found another interesting website, something I was looking for. Finally someone in the person of KB9AMG has made some lists from the WSPR data. Most interesting are the 2-way WSPR contact lists. I suggest to check it out yourself.

It sure was fun but I had better luck listening for beacons. Good luck this weekend and hope you hear some 10 meter activity. I'm not holding my breath. :0)

Yes, the list of "2-way WSPR contacts" is indeed interesting, but they are not what I would call contacts. If I hear you on the air and send you an SWL report, and you hear me and send me an SWL report, that does not constitute a contact because the reports were not sent via the radio.

73 Paul

@Phil - didn't see you on 10m of course neither KL2R. The path seems not be there, but you never know. I received FR1GZ on Reunion Isl. more then 9000km away and my 1W signal was heard at the Faroer Isl. direction north. Anyway, I saw that signals from the USA were heard in Germany.
Good luck to you too in Alaska. hope 10m will open up for you.

@Julian - it is indeed interesting but you know what I'm thinking of it too. They are not real QSO. I absolutely agree with you.

Hi André, I'll stay tuned 10m till the weekend to see what conditions are for the ARRL 10m contest. So, if you like you can try tomorrow. Results till now are surprising but not promising. 73, Bas

Hi Bas,
Dank voor de tip.
Leuk om te zien dat er meer WSPR qso's zijn dan je al wist.
