CQ WW DX RTTY contest 2013

Due to other obligations I only had some time to participate very early in the morning and late in the evening. Contest was made most on the low bands because of that. Luckely HRD and DM780 did work instantly but are not very good for contesting. Anyway, the time was ultimate for 40m of course, I made the best DX just before sunrise in the morning. I've got a lot of USA and Canada in the log on 40m, more then I ever worked on that band before in a contest. 10m was already closed in the evening and not open yet in the morning so I didn't make a single contact there. I managed to do a few on 15m, best DX was Aruba there. 80m was not good for me as well, the vertical is too small and not efficient there. At the end I had 152 QSOs in the log and that was enough for me.

20m: YW5T (Venezuela)
40m: HK1NA (Colombia), N6RO (CA, USA)

Equipment used: Icom IC-706MKIIG output 50W, homemade vertical on 9m AGL.

In verband met andere verplichtingen had ik alleen tijd om deel te nemen heel vroeg in de morgen en laat in de avond. De contest deed ik dan ook meest op de lage banden. Gelukkig deden HRD en DM780 het meteen maar is het programma niet echt geschikt voor contesten. Natuurlijk was het moment van de dag wel ultiem voor DX op 40m zo net voor het opkomen van de zon. Ik heb dan ook een gigantische hoeveelheid Amrikanen en Canadezen in mijn log, meer dan ik ooit gewerkt heb op die band in een contest. 10m was natuurlijk gesloten zo vroeg en 's avonds was die band al weer dicht, dus geen enkel contact daar. Wel wist ik nog wat te werken op 15m en beste DX was daar ook nog Aruba. 80m ging ook slecht, de vertical is te kort om daar efficiënt te zijn. Op het laatst had ik 152 QSO's in het log, ik vond het wel prima zo. Beste DX hierboven in het lijstje.

Ready for...

Ready for...what? I'm absolutely not ready with my new shack. Time has gone elsewhere. I want to participate in the CQWW RTTY this weekend but it will be only very early in the morning and at night. Too many other things to do when it is still light. So, am I ready for RTTY? No, I have to connect everything to the computer and hope that at least I'll get HRD + DM780 to work instantly.

Jaap PA0O was friendly enough to take my PA-beker trophy home when visiting the HF-day in Apeldoorn (tnx Jaap). I was not able to get there as one of the many things to do that day was visiting my mother in the hospital. This year the PA-beker and PACC organisations decided not to send any trophies by post anymore, I think that is not a wise decision as not everyone is able to get their trophy personally. For this I decided not taking part in the QRP section of the PA-beker anymore because there is a risk I win a prize which I probabely never get. So, I will be on low profile taking part not seriously in the normal 100W section which I will never win. I did not yet decide about the PACC contest. If you see the trophy you don't understand why they won't send it as it easily fits in the letterbox and it doens't cost that much to send because it is lightweight.

Klaar voor....wat? Ik ben nog lang niet klaar met de nieuwe shack. Tijd is al ergens anders voor gebruikt. Ik zou graag meedoen aan de CQWW RTTY contest dit weekend maar het zal alleen in de avond en vroeg in de morgen zijn. Te veel dingen te doen overdag als het nog licht is. Dus ben ik  klaar voor RTTY? Nee, ik moet zelfs de radio nog aansluiten op de computer en dan maar hopen dat op z'n minst HRD + DM780 direct werkt.

Jaap PA0O was zo vriendelijk om mijn PA-beker prijs me te nemen toen hij zijn eigen prijs ging halen op de HF-dag afgelopen weekend (bedankt Jaap). Ik kon er niet heen omdat ik buiten heel veel andere dingen die dag ook nog mijn moeder zou opzoeken in het ziekenhuis. Dit jaar hebben de PACC en PA-beker organisaties besloten dat prijzen niet meer verstuurd worden maar moeten worden afgehaald op de HF-dag. Ik denk dat het niet zo een wijze beslissing is omdat niet iedereen in staat is om de prijs persoonlijk af te halen. Aleen hier om heb ik besloten niet meer deel te nemen aan de PA-beker in de QRP sectie, puur omdat ik dan grote kans heb een prijs te winnen die ik misschien niet krijg. Ik zal meedoen in de 100W sectie en heel rustig aan doen, winnen doe ik toch al niet. M.b.t. de PACC contest weet ik nog niet wat ik doe. Maar misschien ga ik niet zo heel erg meer m'n best doen. Als je de prijs ziet snap je niet waarom deze niet verstuurd kan worden, het kost bijna niks aan porto, het ding weegt niets en past door de brievenbus.

Stop buzzing me around!

Latest update about my Astron power supply. It started to buzz again, most irritating. Once again it was on the operating table, this time I mounted rubber rings below the transformer. It is still buzzing but not as loud as it did. I'm thinking about to move it behind the side walls although I don't like to lose it out of sight. This is the third time I moved the PS around, it's heavy....how heavy? Before I moved it to shack again I just checked the weight which is 20,7Kg. Yesterday evening I had everything connected and checked the bands, propagation was weak but it was there. To test I made a QSO on the Dutch national frequency 7077KHz with PD1GYS Gijs from Almere. Everything worked well, SWR is below 1,5:1 on all bands, no RFI on my audio equipment that is installed 1,5m from the radio.

Laatste update over de Astron voeding. Het ding ging ineens weer erger brommen, erg irritant. En nogmaals beland het ding op de operatietafel, dit keer voor het monteren van rubber ringen onder de transformator. Hij bromt nog steeds, maar niet zo erg als het was. Ik zit er toch sterk aan te denken om het ding achter het knieschot te plaatsen, alhoewel ik de voeding liever niet uit het oog verlies. Dit is de derde keer dat ik met het ding sleep in korte tijd, hij is zwaar....hoe zwaar? Voordat ik hem de trap op de shack in draag heb ik hem eerst even gewogen: 20,7Kg. Gisterenavond had ik eindelijk alle kabels aangesloten en kon ik even een test doen. Op alle banden kon ik wel wat horen. Op de nationale frequentie 7077KHz nog even gesproken met PD1GYS Gijs uit Almere en dat ging prima. SWR is op alle banden beneden de 1,5:1 en belangrijk: geen RFI op mijn audioapparatuur die ongeveer 1,5m van de radio staat.
