I was at home today as my XYL had some other activities. I decided to do some WSPR on 10m in the afternoon. And again this evening I see that most of the stations I receive are using 5W. Why? 5W is normally considered QRP but on WSPR it is QRO. 1W or less is far more interesting to monitor propagation. What? Your radio is not going below 5W? Rubbish! Everyone has a audio slider on his computer. Just position you audio output at 20% or so, I guarantee you're below 5W.
Ik was vandaag thuis omdat mijn XYL wat andere activiteiten had. Ik besloot WSPR aan te zetten op 10m vanmiddag. En vanavond viel het me weer op dat de meeste stations 5W gebruiken. Waarom? 5W zal misschien QRP zijn normaal gezien maar in WSPR is het gewoon QRO. Wat? Je radio gaat niet lager dan 5W? Onzin! Iedereen heeft een volume regeling op z'n computer. Gewoon het schuifje op 20% zetten of zo en je hebt gegarandeerd minder vermogen als 5W.

Bas, this discussion comes up once every 2-3 months on the WSPR website. WSPR is a weak signal mode and not a low power mode, and sometimes 100W into a short window wire antenna is more "low-signal" than 1W into a 4 element beam. Of course, when open the 10 meter band needs less power than the 40 meter band for example, but be glad there are operators using a wide range of power outputs, so we can get a better idea on how good the propagation is.
Anyway, nice range of contacts with just 1W, from Middle East to North America.
Hello Razvan, not shure if I agree with you. Compare the stations that receive my signal and those that I receive. I work with a small homemade multiband vertical at 9m above ground level. Not the best antenne you can imagine. 10m was not open very well, I was surprised to be heard in the USA. I've been "QRO" with 5W on a MP-1 portable antenne a while ago and came to the conclusion that most of the station could have been reached with 1W only. See: here. 73, Bas

Ik snap het ook niet dat men zo nodig grote vermogens moet gebruiken bij WSPR. Weak signal is inderdaad geen 10W maar hooguit 2W of lager.
Ik vraag mij ook altijd af wat de reden is om QRO te gaan bij/met een Weak Signal Propagatieprogramma.
Waarschijnlijk bang om niet ver genoeg gehoord te worden hi.

Hallo Hans, het gaat mij vooral om de opmerking dat men niet lager kan als 5W. Men ziet de mogelijkheid om de audio terug te zetten totaal niet in. Wat de reden is dat men 10W of meer gebruikt is mij ook een raadsel. Ik zou het me kunnen voorstellen als je inderdaad een dummyload of breinaald gebruikt als antenne maar anders is het totaal overbodig. Zelfs op schiermonnikoog had ik beter 1W kunnen gebruiken en was ik dan volgens de analyse van Bert toch nog in Alaska en Australië gehoord. 73, Bas
