What kept me busy last few weeks

The same day of the fire I visited PD0FF Foppe, who is living in the same QTH as were my job is. I shot this photo from his antennamast with my phone. I actually wanted to write about that visit, but that day went so much different from what I planned as you already know. Foppe does visit me regulary at the workshop. I know him from long time ago, I think first time I contacted him on radio was in the ninetees or before? On 11 Mtr or CB whatever you prefer to call it. When I moved out of the house of my parents in 1995 I lived relatively close to him and he even arranged a free standing aluminium antennatower for me at that time. I'm very gratefull to him he did that with a lot of HAM spirit. Now, once and a while he has a problem with digital modes and  his radio(s). I try to help him as good as I can. But it is always a miracle to me how he get his radios broken so many times. Sometimes I can fix his problem most on computer related problems. Well I think it's important to help a fellow HAM if he needs it.

Foppe did show me a Baofeng UV3R he bought on a radiorally. In my opinion he didn't get a bargain as it was used and it is the original version 1. He payed exact the same prize as a new one. Anyway, we made some QSOs in the last couple of days and it's amazing how clear these little HT are, even through buildings and from one side to the other in the village the range is really good. But still on the bike with the Baofeng I'm not satisfied with the new antenna, bought a 5-003SM-UV at 409shop after reading a comment from PE1BVQ on this topic I made earlier. I've got the idea that it's not improving the signal compared to the original "rubberduck" dual band antenna. Something I experienced with my Alinco HT and expected the same actually. Still my Alinco is receiving much better, though of course the Baofeng is a cheap toy compared to the Alinco. So a comparisation between those 2 is not fair.

The UV-X4 software you can download on the internet by the way does work fine here. Excellent when you made a error and deleted a programmed frequency. Just plug it in your USB port with a USB programming cable and load your back-up. I use the HT every day when biking to my job, 5 days a week. And just have to charge the battery once a week. Not bad at all. Although I mainly listen radio, not many QSOs. I actually noticed something else when making a QSO while biking I get exhausted as talking is mixing up the ritm of my breathe. I hope this has not anything to do with aging?

Well, the fire at my job did make a big impact on all of us and the neighbourhood. Lot's of people are regulary customers. And because of that you know some of them and they know us. Luckely everything is well insured and most important everyone does still have their jobs including me. I returned to the job and still do what I supposed to do, nothing have changed for me. But others are having a long vacation. The site is a secured place because of asbestos which was used on the roof of the building. They are dismanteling the place now and hopefully a new shop will arise as soon as possible. In the mean time we got a new forklift driver, she only needs to get a license for it....

Hello BAS,

Sorry to hear about the fire. Thank goodness it didn't burn your part of the building. Hope things return to normal soon.

Well, time will tell if everything will return normal. At least I'm still on the job.73, Bas

Hallo Bas,

73, Bas
