Are we still safe in Europe?

Recently there are reports in the news about a new OTH radar being build by Russia near Kaliningrad. I wonder if this will have another impact on the amateur radio frequenties as we all know OTH radar QRM on 20m and 10m and several other bands.

I'm starting to get a little concerned about what Russia does with such an radar installation. From what I read on the internet they can detect missiles, jets etc. from a distance of 3000km which is in fact covering the whole of Europe. Of course you could do this for defense, but who is kidding who...

I'm living near a big seaport with large datacenters and one of the biggest power plants in our country. It is a very strategic site. And I repeat, I live very close to this. Recently they report unindentified drones flying over the area at night between one and eight O'clock. Especially in the weekends. And not only in this area but at a few strategic areas in my province. It is very disturbing and I'm a little concerned about this as well. It could be anything of course, but I don't like it at all. No one knows were the drones are coming from but since I live close to the coast it could be they are launched from a ship.

I'm sure this is not only happening in my area but in other (strategic) areas and countries as well. I wish I could do something about it but for ordinary people this is impossible. We can only just wait and see what happens. Hopefully the world and our area will not be on fire in a very soon future...

  1. Hallo Bas, hope you are well. I have lots of friends and family who appear to be totally blind to the possibilities of Putin’s atrocities spreading deeper into Europe. In fact, most of them are totally indifferent to the insane actions of Russia, America and Israel.

I live close to Heysham nuclear power station and not far from the BAE Nuclear Submarine Yard - both are primary targets. It’s a crazy world - made all the crazier by the Trump administration.

  4. Hello Bas!

Let’s take the worry level down a bit.

This type of antenna array is more a sensor watching than a targeting tool. It does pose an amateur radio risk but more from an QRM aspect.

Living in a target rich QTH is always something that raises potential risks. The targeting-differential between areas is publicly known, though might take a bit of research to find and understand. People earn PhDs studying this sort of thing, fortunately studies that reflect preparedness rather than experiences.

Nocturnal drones are not that abnormal. My industry flies them extensively, with various thermal imaging. The industry gold standard is to fly an area in daylight and then again in the dark. In my area the thermal performance of buildings is being evaluated to determine what service is needed. These drones are also flown to look for electrical and other flaws. Whether the media coverage is valid is a question, and from a preparedness perspective whether the drones cause a defensive posture change could be what we look for.

About that media, that is where the war you and I are experiencing actually emanates from. For various purposes we are being made scared, even when little has actually changed in the risks to our world.

Why? To either impart an opinion or distract us from a facts-based opinion.

What are the risk factors that are directly affecting us, and put our individual lives in jeopardy? Non-integrated migrants are a risk that we prefer to ignore, as society craves the labor imported with these replacement populations enough to wear blinders that the risks are tangibly high.

We allow measurable risks in everything from chemical exposure to distortion in in information presented as much more factual. We dose ourselves in chemicals in combinations we know are bad, while willingly allowing a “The Truman Show” synthetic information world to be built around us.

Then we allow this synthetic information world to distract us into complaining about individuals on the world stage, somehow making the actual presence of tangible risks less likely to be something we will confront.

None of this is things to keep us awake in fear, rather these are things we need to learn to mitigate as a minimum, and if we can we should learn to read the situation and use what we learned to make our individual worlds better for us and our children.
