I had the honour to meet Joe K1JT on air at 20m JT9 this evening. Joe is the inventor of WSJT (Weak Signal JT) digital modes. The WSJT mode software he gives us for free has been changing amateurradio forever. Who ever had thought of working the world with this mode is easy 10 years ago? Even for modest stations. I think this mode will be very populair in the next few years with low propagation. Not many people know that I had a influence on the software as I
wrote Joe in 2009 answering his e-mail. Actually I think The text in "tab 2" above the buttons was my idea to clarify the difference between calling and answering. In the mean time WSJT-X can now be controlled via the HRD cat system, one of the features I liked to see. Joe, if you ever read this, thanks very much for this great digital mode, your my HAMradio hero. And of course thanks for the QSO...
I hope to be back on WSJT in the next few days. My recent upgrade to Windows 10 required a reload of Flex SSDR software and I lost all the old settings.

Hello Mike, it was indeed a nice surprise. I saw him in QSO with a polish station and called CQ higher up the waterfall after the QSO. Hoping he saw me, and he did :-). 73, Bas

ReplyDeleteI wanted to get into the JT modes (JT65A/JT9) and found it hard to find partners especially in JT9. Beside that, I thought it was a qrp-mode, but I was with my 2 watt overridden several times and people told proudly about using 10-40 watt. With which power levels do you work?

Hello Hajo, nice to see you get on JT modes. Normally I use the FT-817 with 5W. I prefer JT9 as it is more sensitive and a smaller print. Sometimes I have the audio connected to my Icom 706 and use max. about 20W. The contact with K1JT was made with 10W. But since the signals were strong it could have been easily done with 5W. Deletethat's what I wanted to know for the ARRL proposed to start with 20 watt up to 50. But my max is 5 watts.
In the meantime I was able to have some QSOs with also the FT817 and a cheap Chinese oven. It works and I will stay with JT9.
