JT9 Propagation tests with QRP(p) on 20m

Nothing heard on 10m late this evening 20 UTC. Decided to go for 20m JT9. Started with CQ on 5W, went down to 2,5W -> 1W -> 0,5W -> 0,1W. VK3AMA was the only station that kept spotting me. He must be at a very quiet location and having amazing antennas. Although I was spotted at several others I didn't get a single reply on my CQ.

Niets gehoord op 10m laat in de avond rond 20 UTC. Besloten om maar eens 20m JT9 te gaan testen. Ik ben begonnen met CQ geven op 5W, elke keer een stap naar beneden 2,5W -> 1W -> 0,5W -> 0,1W. VK3AMA was de enige die me maar bleef spotten. Hij moet op een heel rustige locatie wonen en ongelofelijk goede antennes hebben denk ik. Ondanks dat ik door diverse stations werd gespot kreeg ik geen enkele reactie op mijn CQ.

QRPp on 10m digimode

I had some time for radio this evening. Time is related to QRP(p) as I figured out before. So it was time to try some QRPp. Transmitting 1W JT65A with my FT-817 and HB9CV on 10m. It took at least a 1,5 hour but then I had succes. First QSO with PY5TJ who came back to my CQ over 10000km distance. Later in the evening with LW2EIY a distance from over 11000km and report -23dB. I tried a couple CQs with 0,5W to see if someone would spot me but had no luck.

1W spotted a lot in South America

Ik had een beetje tijd voor de radio deze avond. Tijd is gerelateerd aan QRP(p) zoals al eerder geschreven. Dus het was tijd om wat QRPp te proberen. Uitgezonden vermogen 1W JT65A met de FT-817 en HB9CV op 10m. Het heeft in totaal zeker 1,5 uur geduurd maar ik had succes. Eerste QSO was met PY5TJ die terug kwam op mijn CQ een afstand van over 10000km. Later op de avond nog met LW2EIY een afstand van ruim 11000km en rapport -23dB. Ik heb nog een paar keer CQ gegeven met 0,5W om te kijken of iemand me zou spotten, maar dat lukte helaas niet.

Time stood still. That's exactly what happened last friday evening. Instead of a quiet evening trying to make contacts on the radio I was facing a computer with problems. I was trying on 10m calling VP8LP who didn't hear me after all. Suddenly computer time and computer freezed. All I could do was restart the computer by switching it off. But it didn't restart at all. I suspected the videocard which made a lot of noise lately and actually seemed very sensitive for HF. I luckely have a donor computer of exact the same model with a broken motherboard. So I replaced my videocard for the original one. But still no restart possible. Could it be the power supply? I replaced it for the one from the donor computer. Now, this will be the third power supply in 6 years time! Well, the computer restarted and does play again. My guess is that the videocard was to heavy for my computer blowing the power supply again or HF was induced through the videocard and blew part of the power supply? However everything is working again. This evening I tested the station and made a 11000 km contact to LW1DXH from Argentina on 10m with 5W PSK31.

De tijd stond stil. Dat is exact wat er gebeurde afgelopen vrijdag avond. In plaats van een rustige avond voor de radio was ik met computer reparatie bezig. Ik probeerde te roepen naar VP8LP op 10m, helaas lukte dat niet zo goed. Plotseling merkte ik dat de tijd op de computer stil stond, en ook de computer zat vast. Ik kon alleen nog maar de computer uitzetten met de aan/uit knop om te herstarten. Maar helaas, dat ging ook niet. Ik dacht direct aan de videokaart omdat die de laatste tijd veel lawaai maakte. Gelukkig heb ik nog een donor computer van hetzelfde model met een kapot moederbord. Hier uit haalde ik de originele videokaart maar ook dit hielp niets. Zou het dan toch weer de voeding zijn? Overzetten van de voeding bracht de computer weer tot leven, ondertussen alweer de 3e voeding in 6 jaar. Ik denk dat de videokaart toch iets te zwaar was voor deze computer en de voeding wat heeft overbelast, of misschien toch een inductiespanning via HF? Geen idee? Maar het werkt allemaal gelukkig weer. Vanavond even een test gedaan en direct een leuke QRP 5W verbinding gemaakt over 11000 km met LW1DXH uit Argentinië op 10m PSK31.

Some unexpected QRP DX on 10m SSB

I had some time to do something with the hobby this afternoon. I decided to try the PE1BVQ endfed Hans sent me a while ago. But just when I had the antenna half in the air the weather was changing and it started to rain. So instead I went into the shack and tried 10m with the FT-817 on the HB9CV. I didn´t expect much as propagation is not that good lately. So, when I heard several strong signals from Malaysia I was surprised. In no time I found myself in a real nice QSO with 9W6ZUL "Zul" from Kota Kinabalu, Eastern Malaysia. My report was 59 with my 5 Watt and I had to report again that my power was really QRP. I expected Zul had a big antenna on his side but he worked with a 4 element 6m/10m dualband beam on 6 mtr above ground. After this QSO I had 2 short ones with West-Malaysia to 9W2GEO and 9M2TO both with 5 Watt USB. The endfed has to wait till later as my radio time was over today.

Ik had vanmiddag een beetje tijd voor de radiohobby. Besloten werd om de PE1BVQ endfed die Hans mij een tijdje terug stuurde uit te gaan proberen. Maar net toen ik de antenne half had hangen sloeg het weer om en begon het te regenen. Dus maar de radio shack in gegaan en wat gaan draaien op 10m met de FT-817 aan de HB9CV. Ik verwachte niet veel omdat de propagatie niet echt geweldig was de laatste tijd. Toen ik dus sterke signalen uit Maleisië hoorde was ik verrast. In korte tijd zat ik al in een leuk QSO met 9W6ZUL "Zul" vanuit Kota Kinabalu, Oost-Maleisië. Mijn rapport 59 met mijn QRP 5 Watt. Ik moest mijn vermogen nogmaals herhalen om Zul te overtuigen dat ik echt maar met QRP vermogen werkte. Ik dacht dat Zul wel met een grote antenne zou werken maar hij werkte met een 4 element dualband 6m/10m beam op maar 6 mtr hoogte. Na dit QSO had ik nog 2 korte verbindingen met West-Maleisië, 9W2GEO en 9M2TO beide ook met 5 Watt USB uiteraard. De endfed moet nog even wachten, mijn radio tijd was weer op vandaag.

SAT AO-51 receiving & circulair polarised 70cm beam

I was searching in my old archives on a separate harddisk I have. I found a very nice video from the last satellite experiments I did in 2006. It was at the time I decided to sell my 2x20 element 70cm circulair polarised beam but had to repair it first. This are the results. I sold it a week later in the same year. I was very active on sats in 2001-2003 and used a program called satscape for tracking. I did like working on the sats a lot as it came close to DXing on HF which we were not allowed to do without CW till 2003. At this experiment I used HRD with CAT control. The nice thing is that the doppler is automatically corrected as you can see in the video. 

Ik was aan het zoeken in mijn oude archieven op een externe harde schijf en vond een leuke video van de laatste satelliet experimenten die ik deed in 2006. Op dat moment had ik net besloten om mijn circulair 2x20 elements 70cm beam te verkopen, alleen moest er nog wat aan gerepareerd worden. Dit waren de uiteindelijke resulaten. Een week later heb ik de beam verkocht. Ik was in 2001-2003 best wel aktief op diverse sats en gebruikte toen het programma satscape voor tracking. Het werken op de sats vond ik vergelijkbaar met DXen op HF wat we toen nog niet konden zonder CW. In de video gebruikte ik HRD + CAT besturing. Het leuke hiervan is dat de doppler automatisch gecorrigeerd word.

Bad 10m propagation last weekend

Left WSPR running on 10m last weekend as I still hope my signal will be reported by a TJ3 station that is active on WSPR sometimes. The antenna was the HB9CV on 6m agl direction south the radio as always the FT817 with 1W. Sunday was the worst day as I was only spotted by one DX station. I remember "black out" days from when I was active on 11m DX. Even when in the sunspot maximum this is possible. I noticed SSN was lower then other days and A index was 25 at Sunday.

Liet WSPR draaien op 10m afgelopen weekend omdat ik nog steeds hoop op een rapport van een TJ3 station dat af en toe actief is. De antenne was de HB9CV op 6m agl in de richting zuid en de radio zoals altijd de FT817 met 1W. Zondag was het heel erg, werd maar door 1 DX station gespot. Ik kan me dit soort "black out" dagen wel herinneren van mijn 11m DX tijd. Zelfs in een zonnevlekken maximum is dit mogelijk. Voor zover ik het terug kon zien was het zonnevlekken getal lager als andere dagen en de A index was 25 op Zondag.

I was surprised to get a -paper- logbook offer on my e-mail last week. A paper logbook that holds 2500 QSOs? What a hell if you try to find that one special call in your log! I remember I started on HF amateurradio in 2006 again after 3 years off the air, I was still logging on paper. When I got into my first contest I stopped at QSO nr. 100 as it was not possible to see if I worked a station before. I then went to HRD version 4 for logging and still do use this as my main logging program. I especially like the search feature in the program and the DXCC list which can also be converted to html for website publishing, besides that I use the program on 3 different computers and have the main database on dropbox. So I always have the latest updates on all 3 computers. HRD logbook is also good to configure, other fonts, colors etc. The main disadvantages of this old HRD logbook version is the country file that is not up to date although you can alter it yourself and it's not supporting LOTW. But there is a LOTW workaround together with HRD utilities.

How many stations are actually still logging on paper? And what do you use for logging your QSOs? What is te best feature in your log (program) you think?

Ik was verrast toen ik afgelopen week een aanbieding kreeg voor een papieren logbook op mijn e-mail. Een papieren logbook waar je 2500 QSO's in kan zetten en waar je ook nog je WAS e.d. in kan bijhouden. Wat een hel als je in zo een logbook een QSO wilt terugvinden! Ik herinner me dat ik in 2006 weer ben begonnen met HF amateurradio na 3 jaar afwezigheid, uiteraard logde ik nog steeds op papier. Toen ik meedeed aan mijn eerste contest moest ik na 100 QSO's stoppen, ik kon niet meer snel uitvinden of ik een station al gewerkt had. Ik ben toen snel overgestapt op HRD versie 4 voor het digitaal loggen, en ik gebruik het logboek hiervan tot op heden nog steeds als mijn basislogger. Het voordeel van dit logbook vind ik de zoekfuncties, de lijst van DXCC die je ook om kan zetten naar HTML voor bijv. publiceren op een website, de makkelijke en uitgebreide configuratie en het centraal ergens wegzetten van de databases. Ik heb mijn logboeken allemaal op dropbox staan en gebruik HRD V4 op 3 verschillende computers en heb toch altijd de laatst bijgewerkte versie beschikbaar. De nadelen zijn de verouderde landen lijst die je overigens wel kan aanpassen en  het niet ondersteunen van LOTW. Alhoewel er een mogelijkheid is om LOTW te implementeren i.s.m. HRD utilities.

The end of Windows XP

Officially Windows XP has it's end of lifetime today. My good old laptop with Windows XP tablet edition will be worthless! Is it? Microsoft did even update my laptop with the April 8th notification. Computers with Windows XP would not be safe anymore....was Windows ever safe? This update told me I had to upgrade to Windows 8.1 or if my computer will not eat that I'll better look for a new laptop. Just buy a new computer? I just don't have the money for it, not for a upgrade, not for a new computer. I wonder if XP just stop? That would be the end of my blog! I found this fun picture somewhere, it seems Microsoft have invented the wheel again with Windows 8, it really is not my thing. Although there are alternative desktop workaround programs around. A nice read is a story from Hans PD0AC on his other blog "Sacred Silicon". In the mean time I hope my old laptop with XP, virusscanner and extra firewall will continue to function.

Computers met Windows XP zullen vanaf die datum niet meer veilig zijn......was Windows veilig dan? Deze update vertelde me dat ik naar Windows 8.1 moest upgraden en als mijn computer dat niet wou eten dan werd het tijd voor een nieuwe computer. Gewoon even een nieuwe computer kopen? Ik heb daar helemaal geen geld voor en ook niet voor een opwaardering van de software. Ik vraag me af of XP nu gewoon stopt? Dat zou het einde betekenen van deze blog! Ik vond nog een leuk plaatje, het blijkt dat Microsoft met Windows 8 gewoon het wiel nog een keer heeft uitgevonden, het is niet echt mijn ding. Alhoewel er wel alternatieve bureaubladen te krijgen zijn. Een leuk verhaal kan je lezen op het andere blog van Hans PD0AC "Sacred Silicon". In de tussentijd hoop ik dat mijn oude laptop met XP, virusscanner en extra firewall zal blijven functioneren.

The hunt for new DXCC on WSPR

News was buzzing around on several sites and blogs. WA2YUN Colin is active from Wake Isl. (KH9) also on WSPR. As most of you readers know I'm collecting DXCC on WSPR just for fun. I started on 10m this morning in the hope I would get my 1W signal to him there. But no sign of WA2YUN on 10. So a quick look at the activity site and discovered he was listening on 20m. A switch to 20m then for the rest of the day. With succes, KH9/WA2YUN is my 73th DXCC that reported my 1W signal on WSPR. Besides this 4 new band DXCC on 20m and 1 on 10m have been reported.

Het nieuws ging al als een lopend vuurtje op diverse sites en blogs. WA2YUN Colin is aktief vanaf Wake Isl. (KH9) ook op WSPR. En zoals veel lezers weten verzamel in DXCC's op WSPR voor m'n plezier. Ik begon vanacht al op 10m in de hoop om hem vanmorgen al mijn signaal van 1W aan te bieden. Maar natuurlijk geen WA2YUN op 10. Snel even gekeken op de aktiviteit pagina en het bleek dat hij op 20m zat te luisteren. Geschakeld werd naar 20m voor de rest van de dag en met succes. KH9/WA2YUN is de 73ste DXCC die mijn 1W signaal heeft gezien. Daarnaast kon ik nog 4 nieuwe band DXCC op 20m en 1 op 10m scoren.

End of first season

The CQWW WPX SSB contest means the end of the season for me. That will say the radiohobby (contesting) season. I'll pick up in October when traditionally I start with the CQWW SSB. I the meantime I'll do some radio of course but concentrate on other things that have been done in life. The end of the season also means that the full size 80m horizontal loop has to disassembled. It did it's job once again in winter and now has a summersleep in the garage. My little daughter Anneli was of "great" help.

De CQWW WPX SSB contest betekend voor mij het einde van het seizoen. Dat wil zeggen het radiohobby  (contest) seizoen. Ik begin in oktober weer traditioneel met de CQWW SSB. In de tussentijd doe ik nog wel wat aan de hobby maar zal ik me hoofdzakelijk concentreren op andere dingen die moeten gebeuren in het leven. Het einde van het seizoen betekend ook dat de horizontale loop afgebroken moet worden. De antenne deed weer geweldig werk in de winter maar mag nu een zomerslaap houden in de garage. Mijn QRP Anneli was natuurlijk weer mijn hulpje.

CQ WW WPX SSB 2014 lots of DX

Propagation surprised me. Never had the opportunity to work on 10m/15m late at night before in a WPX SSB contest. I was aiming for 80m/40m but in the end the majority of contacts was made on 10m. I've seen most exotic calls not only from DX but just to for the extra multipliers, you really can't tell were some stations are coming from with these "rare" prefixes. I heard the pacific via the northpole, but it was too weak to contact (T32AZ East Kiribati, 5W1SA Samoa). I worked USA and Canada on 20m at 5 UTC in the morning a very unusual time for me, real excellent greyline DX. Same for Japan at 21:00 UTC in the evening (their sunrise). I wished for some ATNO (All Time New One) DXCC and got it with XW0YJY from Laos on 20m, he was real 59+ and one call was enough to get him in the log. But that's not the only one....10m was wide open and good for DX hunt. I worked YS1YS from El Salvador and OA4SS from Peru and . Both ATNO DXCCs. Happy me....the counter is now at 215 DXCC worked. It is more then expected. Didn't spend a lot of time, that will say not the time I usually spend for this contest. I was only at the radio very early in the morning and at night. At the end I stopped sundaynight at 400 QSOs and worked 90 different DXCC. I can say I had a lot of fun this time! How much points I made? Well is that important for a small gun like me?

De propagatie verraste me. Ik heb in de voorgaande WPX SSB contesten nog nooit 's avonds laat op 10m/15m kunnen werken. Eigenlijk had ik mijn pijlen gericht op 80m/40m maar uiteindelijk heb ik toch de meeste QSO's op 10m gemaakt. Ik heb de gekste exotische calls voorbij zien komen en niet alleen van DX maar van stations die hierdoor een extra multiplier hadden, ik zou van veel stations zomaar niet kunnen zeggen waar ze vandaan zouden komen met dit soort zeldzame prefixen. Ik heb stations uit de Pacific gehoord via de Noordpool maar helaas waren de signalen te zwak om er een QSO mee te kunnen maken (T32AZ Oost Kiribati, 5W1SA Samoa). Ik heb USA en Canada gewerkt op 20m om 5 UTC 's morgens een tijd die precies in de greyline viel, is mij nog nooit overkomen. Zo ook Japan om 21:00 UTC (23:00 lokale tijd) op 20m, bij hun was de zon net op. Ik wenste wat nieuwe DXCC's te werken en ja gelukt met XW0YJY uit Laos op 20m, hij was hier 59+ en 1x roepen was genoeg om in het log te komen. Maar dat was niet de enige nieuwe DXCC.....10m was goed open en goed voor de DX jacht. Ik werkte YS1YS El Salvador en OA4SS Peru. Beide nieuwe DXCC voor mij. De teller staat nu op 215 DXCC gewerkt! Meer dan ik had gehoopt. Ik heb niet eens zo heel veel tijd aan de contest besteed, tenminste niet de tijd die ik er normaal in steek. Ik zat alleen 's morgens vroeg en ín de nacht voor de radio. Uiteindelijk ben ik gestopt bij 400 QSO's en heb ik daarmee 90 landen gewerkt. Ik kan wel zeggen dat ik een hoop plezier heb gehad dit keer! Hoeveel punten ik uiteindelijk heb? Is dat belangrijk voor een klein station zoals ik heb?

USB-Serial converters remotely destroyed, beware!

Just remembered and I have to share it with you all before it is too late! It has been exactly a year ago that something odd happened to me. I was visiting Foppe PD0FF to help him with is Kenwood TS450 and connecting it to the computer via CAT control. It worked but strange enough after lunch it didn't want to connect anymore. The driver was ok and configuring lower speed or fiddeling with DTR and RTS didn't help. Even resetting the computer and radio didn't do any good. Finally we suspect the USB-serial cable was faulty and after a close inspection I saw a strange bubble at the enclosure. After opening it it was clear there was a hole in the chip. Like it was exploded! A couple of days later there was a new cable. When installing this new cable and some updates for HRD I discovered Foppe's computer clock was a year ahead. I did a search on the internet and found some interesting documents which told me that today at around lunch time all USB-serial converters will explode through a external signal via internet. Why? Maybe they want to sell more? Maybe a crazy hacker? Who knows? If you use CAT control with your radio, beware! Better be prepared and disconnect, keep your radio and / or computer off at lunchtime today!

Ik herinner me net iets dat ik nog snel even moet delen voor het te laat is. Het is alweer een jaar geleden dat me iets vreemds overkwam. Ik was bij Foppe PD0FF om hem te helpen met zijn Kenwood TS450 en het besturen via CAT control. Foppe had het werkend maar gek genoeg wou de computer 's middags ineens de radio niet meer "zien". Het stuurprogramma gaf aan dat de USB-serial kabeltje goed werkte en resetten van de computer en aan/uit zetten van de radio hielp niks. Ook niet het configureren naar een lagere snelheid en het aan/uitzetten van de RTS en DTR. Toch maar eens de kabel onderzocht en het bleek dat er ineens een hele rare bobbel op de behuizing zat. Na openen van de behuizing bleek er zowaar een gat in de chip te zitten. Volledig uitgefikt! Een paar dagen later was er weer een nieuw kabeltje. Bij het her installeren van de kabel en updates van HRD merkte ik dat Foppe's computer een jaar vooruit stond. Ik ging eens nadenken en zoeken op internet en vond een aantal interessante documenten waaruit bleek dat precies vandaag rond het middaguur alle converters een signaal via internet krijgen om zich zelf vernietigen.Waarom? Geen idee, misschien om meer USB-serial converters te verkopen? Een hacker die niet helemaal zuiver is? Wie het weet mag het zeggen...Mocht je CAT control gebruiken samen met je radio zorg dan dat je de computer en of internet en radio uit hebt staan rond de middag, een gewaarschuwd mens telt voor twee.
