Fluisteren met Kerstmis

Beide kerstdagen heb ik meegedaan aan de WSPR speciale aktiviteit die van te voren op de WSPR website bekend word gemaakt. De bedoeling was dat alle stations met max. 500mW zouden uitzenden. Helaas waren er toch nog genoeg stations die denken dat 50W overeenkomt met 500mW! In die 48 uur ben ik ontvangen door ongeveer 200 unieke stations uit 24 DXCC. Beste DX was ZL2RX met 18329 km, andersom heb ik hem hier ook ontvangen, ook hij had max. 500mW. Ik werd maar liefst 4x door hem gespot. Interessant was ook dat op eerste kerstdag ik nog steeds gespot werd in de USA door K1JT en WA3ETD om 11:32 UTC, dat is zo een beetje midden op de dag wanneer de zon op zijn hoogst staat. Medeblogger G4ILO werd met zijn MFJ magnetic loop en 500mW door mij 80x gespot op deze 2 dagen, hij ontving mij maar liefst 78x. Ik had +1dB om 12:52 UTC op tweede kerstdag bij hem, ongelooflijk. Beste DX tijd voor mij was tweede kerstdag in de middag. Ondanks dat ik maar met 500mW uitzond heb ik mijn afstandsrecord op 40m verbroken en ook weer een paar nieuwe DXCC kunnen bijschrijven in mij WSPR lijstje.

I participated in the WSPR special activity both christmas days. Every station should not use more then 500mW to transmit. Though in seems to be that some stations still think that 50W is the same as 500mW! I was received by about 200 unique stations from 24 DXCC in 48 hours. Best DX was ZL2RX with 18329 km, I did receive him as well and he was transmitting with max. 500mW also. I was spotted 4x at his station! Interesting that I was still received in the USA by K1JT and WA3ETD at 11:32 UTC first christmas day, that is on the middle of the day when the sun is on the highest point! I spotted fellow blogger G4ILO with his 500mW into a MFJ magnetic loop 80x and he spotted me 78x. Best signal I got from him was +1 dB at 12:52 UTC second christmas day, incredible! Best DX time for me was second christmas day in the afternoon. Though I transmitted only with 500mW I broke my distance record on 40m and made it to some new DXCC for my small list.

Club log & Merry Christmas

De laatste tijd niet zo heel erg veel tijd besteed aan de radio behalve zo nu en dan monitoren met WSPR. Rond deze tijd is het erg druk op het QRL en we hadden hier dankzij de sneeuw nog een vrij grote lekkage in het huis. Een ongeluk komt nooit alleen, de videokaart van de desktop computer weigert 9 op de 10 keer dienst en onze auto heeft het vanmorgen begeven. Maar goed iedereen heeft wel eens pech. Gelukkig zijn we nog gezond en dat is het belangrijkste. Een aantal dagen geleden heb ik mij aangemeld voor Club Log een soort online database waarin het eigen log geanalyseerd kan worden. Ook kun je wat vergelijken met anderen en zijn er verschillende mogelijkheden te uitgebreid om hier te vertellen. Erg handig is ook dat je een link op het blog of een site kan zetten waarmee een ander je logboek kan doorzoeken. Ik heb aan de onderkant van dit blog zoiets geplaatst. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het hetzelfde als wat een gewoon logboek kan, totdat ik een mail kreeg van de beheerders met daarin de gecorrigeerde gegevens van het log dat ik ingestuurd had. Het bleek dat ik nogal wat fouten m.b.t. DXCC had gemaakt. Zo had ik zomaar toch even 2 DXCC meer gewerkt dan ik dacht na correctie van mijn logboek. En dat is nou juist wat een normaal logboek niet kan. Een aanrader dus ! De WSPR special activity is beide kerstdagen op 40m met max. 500mW, als de computer het blijft doen ga ik proberen te monitoren. Tenslotte willen wij iedereen dit blog leest een prettige kerstdagen wensen.

Did not spend much time with the radio last week except for some logging on WSPR. It is very busy on the QRL and we had a big leakage in the house because of the snow. A accident never comes alone, so the videocard of the desktop gives problems 9 of 10 times and this morning our car has a enginefailure. But we are not the only ones that have bad luck sometimes, we are still healthy and that is most important. I registered with Club Log a couple of days ago, a kind of online database to analyse your log. You can compare your log results with others and many other possebilities, I will not discuss it all on this blog just find out yourself. A nice feature is a online search log link you can place on your blog or a website, I did put a link at the bottom of this blog. On first sight you should think this is what a offline logbook can do as well. The difference is that you get a e-mail from the site moderators with corrections after you send in your log. It seems I had made a lot of faults in the DXCC section of my log, so after the correction I made with the help of this e-mail I had 2 more DXCC worked. And that is what another logbook cannot do ! I recommend it ! The WSPR special activity is at both christmas days on 40m with max. 500mW, if my computer is not failing I´ll try to monitor both days. Wintertijd

Vandaag is het echt winterweer met van die oerhollandse plaatjes die je overal om je heen kan schieten met de camera. Veel mist en het vriest, dus alle dauw blijft zitten aan bomen, bloemen, planten en antenne's. Ik heb nog niet getest of het veel effekt heeft op de SWR van de loop en de vertical. Heb door de week niet veel tijd om te experimenteren met de radio. De XYL wil mij ook wel eens zien en dat is vaak alleen 's avonds. Bovendien zijn er de laatste tijd veel contesten geweest dus qua QSO's kwam ik zeker niet te kort. Morgen is de speciale WSPR aktiviteiten dag, ditmaal voor 160m en 15m. Vanaf vanavond zet ik mijn radio weer op 160m met 1 Watt output. En morgen probeer ik de radio nog op 15m te zetten met hetzelfde vermogen. Wie weet levert het weer een paar nieuwe DXCC op. Nog meer mooie winterplaatjes uit onze tuin kan je vinden op de blog van mijn XYL.

It is real winter weather today in the Netherlands. With great Dutch pictures everywere around. It is very foggy and freezing so dew is crystallizing on trees, flowers, plants and antennas. I didn't test yet if it has effect on the SWR of the loop and the vertical. I don't have much time to experiment with radio trough the week. The XYL does like to see me as well and that's always only in the evening. Besides that there has been een lot of contests lately so I had my share of QSOs. There is a special WSPR activity day tomorrow for 160m and 15m. I will set the radio to 160m with 1 Watt tonight and try to get it to 15m tomorrow before I leave for the job. ARRL 10m contest

Afgelopen weekend een paar uur meegedaan met de ARRL 10m contest. Omdat ik dit jaar geen beschikking had over een richtantenne verwachtte ik niet veel te werken. Maar dat viel dus best wel mee, al heb ik meer gehoord dan ik kon werken. Het resultaat viel me echt niet tegen. Zaterdagochtend werkte ik om 08:20 UTC als eerste GM3WOJ uit Schotland zie het plaatje. Signaal echt 5/5, het moest wel snel want 2 minuten later was hij al niet meer te horen. Zo ging het eigenlijk de hele contest, echte bursts zoals je dat hoort bij meteorscatter. Zodra je een station hoort direct QSO maken want na 1 minuut of nog eerder is het signaal weg. Op een paar uitzonderingen na, zo kon ik EA5AX een vrij groot gedeelte van Zaterdag en Zondag horen met 5/9 ! Zaterdag waren er ook nog zuid-afrikaanse stations te horen, en QSO maken lukte mij helaas niet. Zo hoorde ik ZS6BRZ, ZS6JPY en ZS6GL zo rond de S3. Zelf werkte ik zaterdag: GM3WOJ, EA5DFV, EA5AX, PD7BZ, EA4WT, AO1Y, EA1EY, CR5T. Zondagmorgen werkte ik het eerste uur helemaal niets, ik hoorde alleen wat stations ver in de ruis maar een QSO maken was onmogelijk. Later werden de condities iets beter soms met signalen die ineens weer omhoog kwamen door de meteorscatter. Leuk was de opleving richting scandinavië, OH6CT was echt 5/9 bij mij daarna niet meer gehoord. Wat mij altijd weer opvalt is een aantal stations dat hier echt hard doorkomt maar die echt helemaal niets horen, als of ze de ATT nog aan hebben staan. Winnaars die beide dagen gehoord zijn wat mij betreft: PA0AA , DL6BFL en EA8MT, ze zouden echt hun ontvangst even moeten controleren want er is volgens mij iets mis. Verder heb ik nog een aantal leuke multipliers gehoord maar niet kunnen werken: IZ4AMS (Heb echt geen Italiaan kunnen werken), 5B4AIF en 9A2U. heb ook nog een OE3 station gehoord die ik vergeten ben op te schrijven. Omdat ik eind van de middag naar een verjaardag moest kon ik helaas niet verder. Toen ik rond 18:20UTC thuis kwam heb ik direkt de radio weer aangezet om te horen of er nog wat te werken viel. Van PD7BZ kreeg ik een bericht dat zuid amerika te werken was, dat was nog eens een leuke verassing. Helaas heb ik het grote feest gemist maar ik kon nog net PY2LSM werken. Op het moment dat ik dit schrijf zijn er nog steeds condities maar ik heb de radio maar uitgezet. De ARRL 10m contest zat weer vol verassingen en ik heb me weer vermaakt.

I took part in the ARRL 10m contest this weekend for a few hours. Because I have no directional antenna up at the moment I was not expecting to make a lot of QSO. Well, after all I made a lot more then I though I should. The results were not disappointing. First QSO was with GM3WOJ from Scotland Saturdaymorning at 08:20UTC with a real signal of 5/5, very fast because 2 minutes later he was gone into the noise. It went on and off this contest, like you expect with meteorscatter there was a burst on signals. If there was a signal heard, better call and make the QSO as fast as possible as seconds later the signal was gone. There were a few exceptions, like EA5AX who was heard on both days with 5/9 over a great part of the day. I also heard some south african stations on Saturday with signals till S3: ZS6BRZ, ZS6JPY and ZS6GL. I could not make a QSO unfortenately. I worked these stations on Saturday: GM3WOJ, EA5DFV, EA5AX, PD7BZ, EA4WT, AO1Y, EA1EY, CR5T. First hour on Sunday I worked nothing at all, only heard a few stations. But propagation improved a little over the day on and off of course, once and a while a burst from meteorscatter. At a certain moment there was some propagation towards Scandinavia, OH6CT had a real 5/9 here and then went into the noise never to be heard again. Three stations were heard both days with strong signals that should check if their ATT is ON: PA0AA, DL6FBL and EA8MT, in my opinion something is wrong with their receivers. Besides all that I heard some nice multipliers I could not contact: IZ4AMS (I really didn't work any Italian!), 5B4AIF and 9A2U. Also heard a OE3 station but forget to write down his call. At the end of the afternoon I had to go to a birthday party so I couldn't continue. As soon as I came back at arond 18:20UTC I immidiatly switched on the radio to hear if there was still something on the frequency. From PD7BZ I got a message that south america was on, a nice surprise! Unfortenately I missed most of the fun but I managed to work PY2LSM at the end. There is still propagation at the time I write this but I switched off the radio. The ARRL 10m contest was full of surprises and I enjoyed myself taking part in it.

TY1MS QSL

Gisteren kreeg ik de QSL van TY1MS per post binnen. Een leuke QSL van een voor mij nieuwe DXCC. Het viel niet mee om ze te werken zoals al eerder in deze blog vermeld. Het goede van dit soort DXpedities is dat het niet alleen om de radioamateurgemeenschap gaat maar dat een deel van het binnengekomen geld naar een goed doel gaat. Eigenlijk zouden er veel meer van dit soort DXpedities moeten zijn, dat geeft het hele radioamateur gebeuren ook een stukje meerwaarde denk ik. Dit weekend is er de 10m ARRL contest, tot nu toe heb ik daaraan nu drie keer meegedaan. De eerste keer in 2006 werd ik eerste van Nederland op SSB low power, ik was ook de enige deelnemer ;-) Nu verwacht ik niet dat er veel condities zullen zijn, maar je staat er toch altijd verbaast van wat je zoal op 10m nog kan werken in zo een weekend. Misschien mede omdat de Geminiden net voorbijkomen in dit weekend. Al zou je niet verwachten dat een ionisatiespoor effect heeft op frequenties beneden 30MHz wijst de praktijk wel anders uit. Ik heb al meerdere malen op 10 en 11m waargenomen dat er wel degelijk signaal verschillen zijn bij meteorenregens. Wie weet wat het ons gaat brengen. Vorig jaar werd door PA0O toch nog een paar keer USA op CW gewerkt tijdens de contest. Dit jaar doe ik mee met alleen mijn vertical en de loop. Van de loop verwacht ik niet zoveel op 10m, maar je weet maar nooit. Rond deze tijd kijk ik wel eens met weemoed naar mijn 5 en 6 elements beams die gedemonteerd boven in de garage liggen te wachten op betere tijden. Het plan is alleen QRV te zijn tussen 11:00 en 14:00 UTC, dat is volgens mij de beste tijd voor eventuele propagatie.

I received the QSL from TY1MS yesterday by post. A very nice QSL and a new DXCC for me. It was a struggle to work them as I told earlier in this blog. The nice thing of this DXpedition is that it is not only about the amateurradio community, part of the extra money they get for the QSL and activation is spend for charity. I think there should be more of these DXpeditions so amateurradio is promoted to be more worth then a new DXCC for radioamateurs.
The ARRL 10m contest is on this weekend, I participated 3 times. I was first of the Netherlands at SSB Low power in 2006, actually I was the only participant ;-) Now, I don't think there is too much propagation, but since the Geminides are there this weekend it could be surprising! Do you think that it is impossible to have some effect of a ionisationtrail below 30Mhz? Well, I experienced difference in signals on 10 and 11m when the meteorshowers where there a few times in the past. Who knows what it is doing to the propagation this time. PA0O made some QSO to the USA on CW in the contest last year. I only have the vertical and the loop antenna this year. I don't expect much from the loop on 10m actually but you never know! Around this time of the year, with a sad feeling, I always look up in the garage were my 5 and 6 element beam for 10m are waiting for better times. The plan is to be QRV only between 11:00 and 14:00 UTC as I expect best propagation around that time.

1e JT65a QSO - TARA RTTY contest

Vandaag mijn eerste JT65A QSO gemaakt. Na het lezen van het blog van PC4T was ik toch wel een beetje nieuwsgierig geworden naar deze mode. En al veel langer dacht ik er aan om JT65A toch eens te proberen. Maar het is geen makkelijk programma en er zijn regels om QSO's te maken. Het is geen kwestie van even zomaar wat doen dus. Gewerkt werd met RK6DA en natuurlijk ging het net als bij PC4T helemaal mis. Maar goed voor een eerste QSO heb ik het wel afgerond. RK6DA werkte een hele lijst af dus dacht ik nog maar eens CQ te doen. Maar helaas verder geen QSO gemaakt of een ander station gezien. Zaterdag ook nog even meegedaan aan de TARA melee RTTY contest af en toe een uurtje over de hele dag. Dat ging eigenlijk helemaal niet zo best. Het leek wel of er geen condities waren buiten Europa of het aantal deelnemers was beperkt? Ik heb uiteindelijk in de middag nog wel wat Amerikanen en een Canadees gewerkt, maar over het algemeen was het zoeken naar stations. Ook een tijdje aanroepen bleef vaak onbeantwoord dus ben er op tijd weer mee gestopt. Heb 64 QSO's met veel moeite kunnen maken. Had ook wat meer op 80m verwacht maar het aanbod was zeer gering. Verder ben ik vanochtend voornamelijk op 17m aktief gewerkt. O.a. E20WXA Thailand gewerkt op phone met de loop antenne. Ook hoorde ik VK2GWK met RS5/7 zonder QSB luid en duidelijk met PA3WB praten, na einde van hun QSO nog geroepen maar blijkbaar had Henk de radio al uit.

I made my first JT65A QSO this morning with RK6DA. After reading the blog of PC4T I was curious and before that I already thought about being active on this mode. So this morning I finally found some time to activate the program. And of course just like Paul PC4T, the QSO went a little wrong but I finished it and it is logged. WSJT is not an easy program and there are rules for making a QSO, it is not something you do in just a few minutes! RK6DA worked a whole list of stations so I thought I give a few CQs at another frequency, but no others came back to me and I didn't hear anything else. I also took part in the TARA melee RTTY contest Saturday. It was very difficult to get some in the log as there where not many on the band. It could be propagation? I finally worked a few USA and Canada in the afternoon. Certainly I expected more from 80m, but there was not much to do. Even after 15 minutes of CQ only a few came back. I managed to make 64 QSO finally. This morning I was active on 17m and made some QSO one of them was E20WXA from Thailand. I also heard VK2GWK (Dutch guy in Australia) with RS 5/7 without QSB talking to PA3WB. After they finished the QSO I tried to call him, but there was no response probabely he switched the radio off.

Sked met EI8GHB

Donderdag avond even een uurtje aktief geweest op 80m SSB. Omdat ik op het blog van EI8GHB Anthony las dat hij een klein antenne experiment voor 80m had gemaakt dacht ik maar even een afspraak te maken voor een QSO. Anthony heeft nog niet zo lang zijn licentie en we hadden al eerder geprobeerd elkaar te werken op 40m, helaas was dat niet gelukt. Wel had ik Anthony al een paar keer gehoord, zowel op 40 als op 80 maar steeds lukte het niet om hem te werken. Deze avond maar weer geprobeerd, omdat ik hem niet direkt kon horen heb ik eerst maar een aantal andere QSO's gemaakt. Dat ging perfekt en zelfs werd ik aangeroepen door W2PY die zichzelf Bob noemde. Achteraf denk ik niet dat dit echt een Amerikaan was, vond zijn accent al een beetje raar en na controle op qrz.com kwam er een heel andere naam uit met als lokatie Arizona. Het leek me een beetje sterk dat die plek te werken was op dat tijdstip, in AZ was het toen nl. nog licht. Uiteindelijk lukte het toch EI8GHB te werken en hebben we nog een leuk QSO gehad. Ondanks de QSB was Anthony goed te verstaan en af en toe was er signaal van RS 55. Het was niet mijn eerste QSO met Ierland op 80m maar zeker wel het leukste. Bedankt voor de sked Anthony.

I was active for a few hours on 80m thursdayevening. And since I read on the blog of EI8GHB that he made an experimental antenna for 80m in his garden I thought it would be nice to make a sked with him. Anthony just got his license for about a month ago and we made a sked earlier, but though I could hear him it was no succes. I did hear Anthony a few times already on 40m and even this evening on 80m but had no chance calling him. After we arranged a sked I tried again but at the time we should meet I couldn't hear him at first. So I started to make some QSO's on the frequency. That went well. I even was called by W2PY who called himself Bob, though after checking qrz.com this is probably a fake as W2PY is located in Arizona and it was still light there at the time. Anyway, I finally could hear EI8GHB and I made a nice QSO with Anthony so this time we finally made it.

Although there was a lot of QSB on his signal which went from S1 to 5 he was R4-5 and very well readable. This was not my first QSO with Ireland on 80m but certainly the nicest. Thanks for the Sked Anthony.
