Nice review of the X1M QRP radio

I found a nice review of the chinese X1M QRP transceiver from a unexpected source.

Shack (RF) Ground

Many thoughts surround
The subject of ground;
Too obscure I'd be sounding
If I talked about grounding!
A rod you may pound
Right into the ground
But several have found
The RF goes around
The rod which is grounded
Although it's been pounded.

(Copied from WB2WIK on forums.qrz.com)

I think the above poem does describe exactly how it is. Reading across the internet about the best station RF and lightning ground you will encounter a lot of true and not so true advice. As I don't want to install new shack ground twice I want to do the right thing. But information is very confusing for those that are not professionally involved in this subject. I made a shack ground in the past and as far as I know it did work, though I luckely had no lightning strike ever. The main thing is that I don't want lightning inside the shack so officially grounding must take place at the entrance. Of course you never want to rely on ground when it comes to protect your equipment, I always disconnect everything when heavy lightning is around. So far so good...

- I want a safety earth that keeps out static and lightning from my shack that is independend from the mains house earthing because I use a safety transformer and a separate 12V net in the future.
- I don't want RFI in my shack or at least as minimum as possible.

I have my new shack on the second floor and a perfect RF ground is not possible. A lot of reading about this subject can be done in several books and our never ending information supply the internet.

A very good starting point and almost all information can be found on the website from W8JI. He describes his own situation and gives a lot of tips including pictures.

International Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend 2013

So far worked from the mobile at lunchbreak on 20m SSB.

GC4BRS/P Steven UK0071 Nash Point High (Wales)
ZB2LGT GI0001 Europa Point Lighthouse (Gibraltar)
GB0REL Andrew UK0055 Rathlin East High (Alacatarry head) (N'Ireland)
GB2GNL UK0037 Girdleness Lighthouse (Scotland)

All with my PE4BAS HF mobile antenna and QRP 5W.

I "modified" the modified DV27 antenna again. From practise I noticed I got confused between various tips. I sometimes mounted the 17m tip when I wanted to go to 15m. Besides that it took too long to change bands as I left the screwthread too long. So I colour coded the tips now and shortened the screw threads of all tips except the 10m one. That's because I want that tip be ready for a occasional 11m trip. I also took the opportunity to make a case for the antenna, this case came from the package which holds originally the LED TL tubes that are now in my new radio shack. That way the tips are not spread out all over the car.

A small audioclip finishing QSO with GB0REL

Another Mercy Ships DXpedition: Congo

I recently read about the new DXpedition from the "Mercy Ships" volunteers. After the previous projects in Liberia (5L2MS), Benin (TY1MS) and Sierra Leone (9L5MS) they will activate Congo TN2MS. Normally I won't make time to work a DXpedition these days. But since I worked all other DXpeditions I will try to work them again. It's not only about working the DXpedition but also to support the great work that they are planning to do to help the people in Africa.

More info at: http://www.tn2ms.nl

Calling All Stations

This year I celebrate the 40 years that I am a fan of the progressive rock group Genesis. Yes, 40 years! Calling All Stations" is the last made album from 1997. The album is underestimated as the singer is not the famous Phil Collins but Ray Wilson, which is of course a blasphemy for the real Genesis fan. Although I personally think he did a great job and the recording stayed in my car CD player for over a year. Genesis is not officially ended yet but their last live shows were already 6 years ago. I remember listening some of their recordings back in 1973 when I was just a very young boy. These guys did already start in 1967 and are still active although in several solo careers. Famous names evolving from Genesis are Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Mike&Mechanics. I can tell and write so much more, but I think it's not really interesting for someone that doesn't like this kind of music. Taste of music is very personal. Personally I like music that you can listen to like reading a book, using your own imagination to imagine the feelings and images. What is more interesting, I always search for something to do with radio in music. Genesis referred a couple of times to radio related topics. Both in their songs as on their albums, most direct is their album "Calling All Stations".

Well, I had a discussion 15 years ago with another progressive rock music fan via messages through packet radio. It was G1HGD Mike who lived near London in the UK at the time. In those days it was very populair to exchange tapes and CD-Rs with so called bootlegs (live recordings most made illigal) and other material. We exchanged some tapes and in the package he returned was a lot of new music, one of the tapes contained music from a new group called Porcupine Tree. Since Genesis didn't make many new albums and became more mainstream "pop" I was looking for something else and think I found what I searched for. If you ever heard Genesis from the early seventies this music is probabely close but even more progressive. And again I found several radio topic related in the music of Porcupine Tree as well. The best one is the number station at the end of a song called "Even Less" at their album Stupid Dream.

Even Less by Porcupine Tree on Grooveshark

The nice thing is that the lead singer of Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, is about my age and so there is a lot of new fresh music out from him solo and in colaboration with other singers and songwriters as well as from several music groups he is involved in like Porcupine Tree. He even had the former guitarist from Genesis, Steve Hackett, playing on one of his solo albums. Linking Genesis and Porcupine Tree together that way. Ending this post with a song from Steven Wilson´s latest album.

Oh well, I understand not everyone does like this kind of music. My XYL for example has nothing with it, actually hates this kind of music. Such things are very personal, you´re touched by music or not. I wrote this article as it was interesting in my  point of view with radio in mind linking 2 hobbies together.

My very old personal Genesis site
Personal Collection of bootlegs and related

Muziek smaak is heel erg persoonlijk.

Radioshack update 7 -Time to leave the temporary shack-

Ready to move...
I never thought I had so much radio related items collected over the years. Besides that I got a lot of other things I collected over the years, CDs, DVDs, tapes, poststamps, coins etc.. My XYL assured me this would never fit into the new radioshack, the collection is too large. I really need the clean up and try to find other ways to conserve what I got. I left the old temporary shack now, temporary for 5 years already....time flies. The new shack will hopefully be a definite place for the hobby. It took me and my XYL a day to move everything from old to new shack. I never thought a wireless hobby has so much wires, I really need to sort it all out and make things more organized. It will take days may be weeks before I got everything sorted out and the radio connected I think. Hopefully for the last time in many upcoming years.

Just a nice sky on a nice day

Radioshack update 6 -Electricity-

Electrical diagram by estimation
Well, I was struggling to get a diagram on paper. The whole thing is in my head as usual but I wanted it on paper for future reference. Now everything is ready it shows that theory is different from practice, so the drawing at the left is by estimation. I was able to buy a second hand safety transformer that will feed the shack with mains electricity without the need for additional netfiltering and it's safe. In case of faulty equipment I got less chance to get electrocuted, not that it will happen but it's just the idea. The mains lights are already installed they are LED TL tubes which give light for about 40W but use only 18W of power, I was able to buy 2 for a reasonable price one for the shack and one for the storage room behind it. These are the ones with powerfactor correction, to find out about it just google around. For LED TL it's important to buy the expensive ones and not the cheap chinese crap, it's all about the current/power you really use with these so called economical lights.
Inside the safety transformer

The 12V solar system will be in progress. Building a new shack costs some money and there is nothing left for the solarpanels I thought about. Besides that I need at least a deep cycle battery to hold the 12V power and a solar chargercontroller capable of about 30A. If I want to heat the shack in winter via this system I need kind of a 12V electrical heater something I'm still looking for. For now I made a connection for a 220V heater. At least I will count in on wiring and switches and 12V LED lights(strips) so things could be easily installed as soon as I'm able to buy it. Actually I'm shure some people will scratch their heads why on earth am I doing it that difficult. It's very populair these days to get yourself a complete solar system installed that feeds power into the mains net. But there are disadvantages for us hobby minded people. First it does cost a fortune, at least for me. And second it is not a autonomous system. If you got a power breakdown you will not be able to feed your house and equipment by your expensive solar system. My dream is to make my shack completely independent.

Green switches for 12V lights,
 red for mains wall sockets

Het 12V zonnepaneel systeem is even uitgesteld.

Hot!

Temp. inside/outside the house
Today was probabely the hottest day of the year. What can I say! This is not the kind of weather we are used to. Luckely it's just one day of extreme heat. We stayed inside the house as there were too many insects outside. Just for the blog I went outside for a few minutes to take some pictures of the garden.
