Some contest results

I just visited the site from the CQWW WPX organisation were you can find your result in every CQWW WPX contests you submitted a log. Last year I became 6th in the Single Operator Assisted All Band SSB section. You can download the standard certificate for it and so I did. I became 6th from the 10 submitters of my country. Not bad, but it could be better, although you need time and luck of course. I also got the result from last years national PA-beker contest. And again I became 2nd for the 3rd time in the QRP section. I already have a conclusion why, I just did a wrong gamble to make more QSOs on 80m and attended 40m much too late. Propagation on 40m was much better this year. I could have known that but then I should be more interested in the CW part on the day before, as propagation was almost the same that day.

Well, I missed a DXpedition again. I had some time today in the afternoon to work 9U4U but it seemed I am too late. I listened for them earlier his week, but their signal was too weak to try in the pile-up. I think working DXpeditions is more luck then make hours of time to work them these days. Anyway, I don't care and try for the missing DXCC when I'm retired in about 25 years. I guess propagation will be even better then. And I hope to have the antennamast up at that time :-) Till then, working DX or a new DXCC is pure luck. I hope to work some new ones next month in the WPX contest again!

Down for the wood!

I was not able to do radio too much after the PACC contest. Although I tried to participate in both the RSGB RTTY test on 80m and the russian PSK contest on 40m. The RTTY contest went chaotic, it's just that my Icom cannot handle very strong signals and with the 80m loop you get most of the time 3 layers of stations on the same frequency. I did call CQ, but I could hardly receive anything as most of the time 4 or 5 stations came back at the same time. So after 25 QSO's I stopped. Then next day my neighbour started sawing some trees which are close to my property. One of the trees fell on my 80m loop, so I was without the loop for more then a week.  I had to find another fastening point for one of the radials of my vertical too. So that left me the vertical and 40m for the Russian PSK contest in which I just participated for about a hour. Best DX was Thailand the QSO with E21YDP, not bad at all! The nice thing is that this neighbour  offered me all the wood for the stove, so I'm a happy guy after all. Today I got a day off work. It was nice weather and I decided to repair the loop with a little help from my harmonic. All went well, and this evening I had one hour to test the loop again, the DX went right in on 30m PSK with VK5CE and KP4ED

If only this price would be true!

Nice price for a non existing tuner from Alpha. Not true of course, it will cost 2995 USD ! Alpha has very nice equipment for amateurradio and commercial use. Though I think it's for the wealthy radioamateur only. The cheapest item is a QRP/QRO wattmeter, a jewel really, but still 745 USD. Not really my budget for the hobby.

PACC 2013 contest evaluation

5 QSOs more as last year!  I didn't expect that! I aimed for about 700, but I learned I did lost time calling for exotic DX stations. I think in my heart I'm a DX hunter and not a real contester, I use my DXing experience for multiplier hunting that's a plus. I ended with 10 more multipliers as last year, although I doubt if they are all counting as most of the DX would not give a prog.nr. for the contest. Propagation was almost the same as last year, although 10m was not really open I managed to work Brazil as best DX there again.

Contest station just after the contest.
You can see the vertical outside.
The 40m quarter wave vertical with 2 elevated radials was a hit, I recommend it for those that really want to DX on 40m or just use it in a contest. Compared to the loop the vertical was 1 S-unit/6dB better on DX, and the opposite within the Netherlands the loop was sometimes 5 S-units better. I certainly will set it up next year. I also worked some of the fellow bloggers, I actually made a list of bloggers I worked last year. But these were not heard. I worked PA1SBM Alex who has written a nice evaluation as well, just like PH0NO Lars who did the PACC from his car in the snow. I worked long time radio friend PD7BZ Bernard on both 20m and 40m and had a niced chat with him. I met Tjeerd PA3GNZ operating from PA6W but didn't recognize him at first because of the unfamiliar call, then PE3V which is a multi multi station had blogger/homepage PD9X Laurens as operator when I worked him on I believe 40m. Frank PF5T spotted me after each QSO on the cluster which made immidiate pile-ups. And finally PE2JMR Jan was calling in one of the pile-ups on 80m. Although I listened out for the most loyal follower of my blog PE1BVQ I couldn't hear him at all. He was not the only one I couldn't hear, the splatter on 80m and 40m was overwhelming and I had to let go several stations that were just too weak. Peter PA4PS did mention to me splatter is not a problem with CW when you choose a very narrow filter. But another problem occurs there, everyone is calling zero beat and I can imagine that's causing confusion.

Most interesting  DX:

10m: PU2LEP (Brazil), RK9CYA (As. Russia)
15m: A71AM (Quatar), JI1KXL (Japan), JA3JOT (Japan), JX9JKA (Jan Mayen), NF8J (USA), WP3UX (Puerto Rico), PJ4NX (Bonaire), PY1ZRT (Brazil), R9YA (As. Russia)
20m: PJ4NX (Bonaire), RZ9UGN (As. Russia), VK4QH (Australia), VK2GWK (Australia), ZL2RVW (New Zealand)
40m: 9Y4LAS (Trinidad), A71AM (Quatar), HH2/EK6KB (Haiti), JY6ZZ (Jordan), WP3UX (Puerto Rico), RW9CD (As. Russia), VO1BBN (Canada), KN4KL (USA), W1MBB (USA)
80m: VE1CHW, VE9OA, VA3UW (All Canada)

Just five minutes after the contest I did give a try for 5X8C from Uganda on 15m. A couple of calls later I was in the log. Another new all band DXCC. I took a break and  did lunch. After that I dismantled the 40m vertical and that was the PACC contest for this year, hopefully the score will be enough to get in the top3 again!

PE4BAS PACC 2013 SH5 diagnostics

Nice card already received, best DX on 80m this contest!

1/4 wave 40m vertical

PACC 2013 live from the radiodesk

The PACC were all provinces count as multipliers, but for how long. The politics talk about joining the provinces together sometimes... Well, it is 02:00 UTC in the morning. Believe it or not I just have exactly made the same amount of contacts like last year. 391 QSOs right now with 101 multipliers. The new 1/4 wave vertical is doing a good job, although I didn't work USA yet I contacted JY, A71 en WP4 on 40m. I'm getting a dip now so I just made some ragchew QSOs + I'm writing this in the blog.
I'm thinking of a few hours sleep actually...

PI4H preview

20m full size beam on telescopic bijzen tower
Visited the PI4H contestsite like every year. It was just a short visit. Only PA4PS Peter and PD2TW Tjip were on the site busy with the antennas. Some of them were damaged probabely by wind or...by earthquakes that we experienced last night. They also had some problems with the amps so it is not certain they can be used. New this year are the 3 element full size 20m beam on a height of 24m and a 4 element 10m LFA. Unfortenately operators are not all available this year. Hopefully they will equal or improve their score a bit. 15 hours till the PACC 2013 contest...

4 elem. LFA 10m and 40m vertical

PACC 2013 preparations

Here we are in february 2013. Time for the national PACC contest. I always try to improve my station just to get a little better each year. But the time you participate is important as well. I'm lucky enough to have a understanding XYL and I think I will even have some more time to participate this year. Well, on the side of radio equipment there is not much to improve, I simply haven't got the money for a nice new Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu or Elecraft with all those fancy narrow filters, superb DSP and splatter surpression. I have to do with my own filtering ears and listen on my Icom IC-706MK2G equipped with 1,9KHz SSB filter and some early DSP which helps a lot in contest. On the side of antennas there is always something to improve. The best improvement would be my versatower getting up with a nice beam in it. But for now something simpler has to come out of my box of tricks. One idea is to get a extra antenna up in the air suitable for DX on 40m. Why? Well, last year I didn't work much DX on 40m. Although it would be possible as the local contest station PI4H used a 1/4 wave vertical and made several contacts to the USA. So I bought a 12m GFK pole a while ago and made some wires and preparations to get the 1/4 wave 40m pole with 2 elevated radials on air. I've planned that for Saturdaymorning, so I hope the weather will coorporate. Another idea never occured to me before, why not using the 80m horizontal loop as a endfed for 160m? I always use the vertical, but inside Europe I think the loop wire could be better. I can't tune the loop, but if I lift a wire....yes I can tune it now. To test I made some QSOs with JT65/PSK on 160m with 10W. I got reasonable reports actually, so I'll give it a try saturdaynight/sundaymorning in the contest.

Analyzing PACC 2012

Analyzing the 2012 PACC log is important for the next PACC contest. I want to improve and try to make more QSOs as last year. The number of multipliers is unpredictable as you can only do your best to get as many as possible. But you can go for more QSOs. Last years winner in the LP SSB section had over 800 QSOs. I don't know if it is possible for me to get that high, but at least I should try.
In 2012 my QSO rate dropped between 16-17 UTC (dinner time), 20-21 UTC (coffee break), 03-06 UTC (sleeping). If I want to improve I should eat and drink in the shack! It might be possible this weekend. Sleeping, just a hour or so, will be necessary I think to stay sharp. With a QSO rate of 10 at night I don't win the contest.

Poor radioamateur's mobile antenna

After reading a article in the dutch VERON magazine Electron from PE1GUR about extending an old CB antenna I was just thinking. I still had one of these very populair DV27 antennas which I bought around 1986. At that time I had it mounted on my dad's car as I didn't have a drivers license myself yet. Now, according to the article it was an easy job, just extend the antenna with a piece of stainless steel, PE1GUR used bicycle spokes and welding wire. Luckely my antenna is even older as the one he got, mine has a top with M3 screw thread. I can get very cheap stainless steel M3 studs (I hope this is the right translation?) and so some extensions were made. Compared to the original article my extensions were shorter. I think my original DV27 is slightly longer as PE1GUR's one. I imidiatly noticed that the bandwidth and SWR is much better as my Multiranger 200 and my MP-1. In the end that gives some less loss which can be important when operating QRP. However a disadvantage is the length of the antenna on 20m. With a total length of about 2,38m it will snap for shure when driving.

Hard to make a picture of the complete antenna
Extensions
Why "poor radioamateur's mobile antenna"? Well you can buy the DV27 very often second hand, I even saw them on eBay for only 14 euro. A stainless steel M3 stud is cheap, I pay only 2-3 euro for 1 meter of it. Bicycle spokes are even cheaper I think? Foppe PD0FF heard me on air talking to a station from Italy, he wondered what antenne I used. After visiting me and observing the antenna he bought one for 27,70 euro at a local store. Cheap compared to a commercial made multiple band HF antenna which costs between 59-85 euro and 125 euro for a MP-1. I extended his DV27 with stainless steel M3 stud and a coil. As his license is only for 40/20 and 10m he will only use it on 20m or 10m. His extension uses a coil of 3 cm long and 1cm thick, I took 1 meter copper insulated wire from a old motor to wind it and so the extension could be limited to 82cm. Overall length of the antenna is now around 2,1 meter in total. Because of the coil bandwidth is 100KHz less, after measuring with the MFJ259 analyzer.

first experimental coil
Wound with 50cm wire.
Enough about building, what are the results. PE1GUR writes in his article he made QSOs with Australia, but probabely was using 100W. Well, I should make a test setup with a field strength meter to compare my mobile/portable antennas with this one, I will try that when time allows. I'll test my Multiranger 200 + MP-1 and compare it with this homemade DV27. But I got the idea that this is a winner. I already had that idea when receiving on 20m the first day I used it. I didn't even tuned it then and after I made those last 19 QSOs for the COTA activation I found the SWR was 1,9:1. This isn't a disaster of course, and DX was great. Now I had one hour to test on various bands last friday. I drove the car to the best  DX place to be at the top of a dike. On 17m I made QSOs with UZ5ZV, UR3IF and OH9QR with reasonable reports. I moved to 15m then and made a QSO with 7Z1TT Hamdi, he almost couldn't believe I was QRP and mobile as I peaked S7 at his radio, good copy!
I didn't have time yet do do more testing. It is only 3 days to the PACC contest and have to prepare myself for that as well. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to test this great mobile antenna later.

PD0FF's DV27 antenna with 20m extension and coil

PE4BAS on 4m?

Hard to believe, but I made my first 4m band FM QSO yesterday with PE1RFY Jasper from Bornwird. The QSO was made when attending a club meeting in Leek at PH7B Bert. He offered me to make a 4m QSO and as I do not have anything regarding to this new band I took the opportunity.

In the evening I took part in the EPC PSK63 contest to gather points for the national VERON departments competition. Well, I didn't have much fun and stopped at 26 QSOs. I was active on 80m but the amount of stations was too much. There was a station every half KHz and when I thought I found a empty part in the waterfall and switched on the narrow filter up there were even more stations from behind the noise, with other words there were multiple layers of stations calling. I guess that's a disadvantage of a 80m horizontal quad....

M.a.w. er zaten meerdere lagen stations over elkaar heen.
