ARRL DX contest, running out of time

K0RF at K3LR in 2003
It was beautifull weather Sunday, sun shining almost whole day. I spend most of the time today with my family in the garden and around the house. The choice to do this and not contesting was easy, I never want a horror scenario like the guy in this story. Anyway, the ARRL DX SSB contest was the first contest I ever did on the amateurbands in 2006. So I still have some weakness for it and if possible participate. Back in 2006 made 100 QSOs, a highlight for me that time and it was the reason to get a computer log program to do the logging digital from that time on. I luckely had a hour to spend on the radio in the late afternoon and decided to try QRP with 5W. It went well on 10m and 15m, and a struggle on 20m, this last band was full of strong european stations covering any other DX stations. I made 20 QSOs QRP with as best DX K0RF from Colorado, a distance of  7750km. I aimed for 25 contacts and had tried for another half hour in the evening. But with QRP I had less luck. I was running out of time and decided to go to 100W in the last 10 minutes I could spend. It went a lot easier and made 5 QSOs in 10 minutes. Just enough to get 1 point for the dutch VERON section competition.

73, Bas

QRP is tough but, if the band is hot, propagation can be your amplifier. Great job and a few minutes in a contest is better than none in my opinion!

That's my opinion too. Propagation seemed to be reasonable on the hi bands at that moment I was on. 73, Bas

73, Bert
