Mobile antenna experiments

Just a teaser to let you all know about the new mobile antenna I use. I'll post about the details later. For now only pictures!
On the right side through the solar roof the 20m setup, total length about 2 meters.

Totale lengte ongeveer 2 meter.
To extend the antenna for use on 20m I made a M3 to M3 connection nut myself as it is hard to get.

Because I don't trust SWR meters inside a radio I bought a small el cheapo SWR/PWR meter. It does the job, actually I was afraid the meter was broken. But it does show 1,4:1 at the 20m band edges.

Same antenna, 15m setup. Made a QSO with WP4TT (Puerto Rico) and RN3F (Moscow, Russia).

Zelfde antenne, 15m setup.

PA-00007 finished today!

I finished the COTA PA-00007 today. With the help of PE1BVQ Hans who spotted me on the DX cluster. It did help a lot, after the spot I made another 17 QSOs and a total of 19 today. I will activate this castle more often but it will be on and off just when I have some time at lunchbreak and if I have the car with me. In total I made 54 QSOs from 16 different DXCC. Best DX and also the last QSO from today was with W1OW in MA USA. Best contact today was with EA1MAM/QRP who was also mobile and working with the FT-817. The log is uploaded as PE4BAS and PE4BAS/M, the last call has this special QSL on the left. I think about printing some paper cards as well if I get requests. I used another antenna today which was partly homemade. I'll write about it later but can already tell that it does a better job as the Multiranger 200 and the MP-1. Attached are some QSLs I already received.

A batch of paper QSL cards via bureau

Actually a crosspost with my other blog QSL Code Of Conduct. Some nice paper QSL cards via the QSL bureau. 9G1AA from Ghana is actually a nice new all and DXCC for me. I've 189 DXCC confirmed now via paper QSL, LotW and eQSL.

4U1WRC (ITU Geneva) worked on 40m SSB in the PACC contest last year, FM5CD (Martinique Island) worked on 10m RTTY last year, ZD8O (Ascension Island) worked on 15m SSB in the CQWW 2011 contest and 9G1AA (Ghana) worked on 20m SSB in 2009. I remember the QSO with 9G1AA very well, it was extremely difficult and it was only that some fellow dutch operators were persistent in getting my call that I made the QSO in the end. Thanks guys!

I was active again to get my 50 COTA contacts. I parked the car and saw I forgot my mobile antenna. Luckely the MP-1 was still at the back seat and I installed it on my car. Strange enough I couldn't get the SWR below 1,7:1. But propagation was alright and I made QSOs with IZ8JFL/1 Fabio who is activating some special activation, he has quite en large QRZ page. Next I was in QSO for about 10 minutes with Leo S51FF from Slovenia, Leo worked with his homebrew radio with 20 watts and a shortened dipole. You can see his radio on his QRZ page, his modulation was quite nice and I gave him some compliments. I moved to 14.251 the COTA frequency and after a few CQ calls  SP5TAR Maks was coming back and I had a nice QSO with him as well explaining I was activating a castle. I finished the activation today with UT0MO Alex from the Ukraine. I made 35 QSOs till now, still 15 to go...

9G1AA uit Ghana is mijn 189 DXCC all band mixed bevestiging.

PJ2MI on 30m

I was WSPRing on 30m this afternoon till this evening when I still received spots from over the ocean, but no one seems to spot me anymore. So, I just thought I try my luck on JT65A. I did see a spanish station and tried to answer his CQ, but I didn't succeed with 1W. Then out of nothing PJ2MI (Curacao) was calling, wow! As I did it all on remote I just run upstairs to set my radio for a bit more power as 1W. Unfortunately I can't do that remote with the IC-706. A couple of calls later my QSO with José PJ2MI was made. A new DXCC on 30m and all band! Thanks José.

Remote from the living desk

Wallpaper & badge

I was surprised to receive a nice certificate today. I managed to be 3rd in the Frysian 11 cities contest last year. Good enough as I didn't even seriously try. It was just a fun contest like always. The wallpaper is nice though.

I attended the local radioclub friday evening. Since last year I'm a board member. Not a very important one, but just a member. I keep an eye on the others, so they will behave ;-)
Every board member will get a golden badge, not real gold of course (I think). You have to wear it on were your heart is, so they all see you love the radioclub ;-)

Brilliant!

Notice the difference between the original cable
and the new cable below.
While operating with the FT817 I had several findings and some brilliant solutions ;-) First of all the supplied powercord to the radio is a little thin. The voltage meter on the radio drops 2-3V at least when transmitting. I made a thicker power cord of 1,5mm2 wire, voltage drop is 1V less now. The second thing is that my radio slides from the dashboard. A anti slip pad would be handy. But I have made another solution which can also serve as a handy desk stand. It is not enterily my own invention unfortenatly, DD7LP and W4RT made a similar stand. The one I made is simple and at least just as good. I had enough material to make another 10 and will sell them on the dutch marketplace for 5 euro each including postage (inside the Netherlands). If interested leave me a comment or message.

An event I forgot to mention happened friday evening when I was active on 80m JT65A. At the time it happened it was in the heat of contacting and making QSOs, I forgot about it and actually forgot to make a screenshot of it. But it was a brilliant way of using radio instead of the digital highway. I wrote PH0NO a mail last friday, that I would be activating a castle so he could publish it on his COTA-PA site. I forgot to mention which day. Surprisingly JT-Alert popped up and there was a message out of nothing from PH0NO: BAS SA OR SU (Could have been in Dutch, but this is the translation). I answered: LARS SA as quickly I could, but actually I was flabbergasted. Later he wrote me an e-mail that he couldn't reach me by e-mail, he had his endfed still hanging and connected the radio and computer just to see if it would work out on JT65. It proves radio communication can be faster then the digital highway, brilliant!

Another invention made by me is the thing on the picture. I use it for quite a time now and it's always working. I think I wrote about it before but never pictured it. So guess what it is?

Have made them with red, blue and transparant
protection sleeves

PH00ZWAT superstation!

From DX world: PH00ZWAT -- During the weekend of the 25th-26th and 27th of January 2013 a selected amateur radio team is given the opportunity to use the former Radio Nederland Wereldomroep antenna park in Zeewolde for short wave QSO's. During this weekend the station is NOT open to the public and contacts can only be made via Radio. Apart from the HF station and antennas the team shall try to operate a VHF station simultaneously. This is a Unique one time event and probably the last time that Ham Radio transmissions will be made from this location - operations will start at approximately 8pm UTC on Friday the 25th and will end at 1pm UTC on Sunday the 27th so keep an eye out for us on the cluster and give us a huge pile up ...

I don't know how these guys get permission to this kind of thing. But it would be a opportunity of a lifetime. It has been done before a few years ago, you can find video material about it on youtube.
I certianly try to listen for them and if possible break the pile-up ;-)

Today I was active from the mobile agian for the COTA PA-00007 activation. I tried 40m which was pretty busy. Unfortenately didn't make any contact. I almost had a QSO with M0SBZ but I was to weak so to say and he didn't want to try again. I switched to 20m again and made a QSO with RK9CYA Gyma, UY4IF Victor and HA2EBE Jani.

Update: I just hear the PH00ZWAT activation is postponed. See the comments on this posting!

Examination of comments

Since a couple of days I got a lot of spam at my comments. Of course this is my fault as I did switch off "safety". I switched this off to make it easy to give a comment on my blogposts. But now I will examine comments before they will be published. I hope the readers will understand it and still comment as I like to have some feedback.

I will be QRV from 11-12 UTC again, this time I brought the Superantenna MP-1 with me as it is easier to tune and performance is a little better. I'll try 17m today and will be on or around 18131 KHz USB. I'm thinking of making a double log upload to eQSL as PE4BAS and PE4BAS/M, the PE4BAS/M will have a unique design QSL card. It could take some days before I upload the log.

Operating from the cold extreme

Phil KL8DX and Bob VA3QV would probabely laughing out loud. Operating from the warm car in the snow not from Alaska, not from Canada, but from the cold north of the Netherlands. But be honest, it looks pretty extreme. I did activate COTA PA-00007 again and probabely will activate it till I get at least 50 QSOs to validate this castle. This time I parked the car at my job within 1km from the Menkemaborg castle. It was again -3 C and snowing this time. I first worked EI3GAB while I was still driving (slowly). Next were HA6OD, S52ON, YL2CF and EW1BBA. Today I made a effort again, 20m looks quiet but propagation is there. I heard a station from New York with 5/7. I made QSOs with LY3I Vytas, 4X4REM Shachar (13 years old!), UU1JH Serge and PD0FF Foppe. I will be trying next days as well as the weather is too bad to cycle to my job. I'll be on air in SSB between 11-12 UTC around the SOTA frequencies (7131, 14251, 18131 etc.).

My position on google maps.
Note: there is some snow now ;-)

Remote control radio experiments

1898 Tesla remote controlled a boat. Already before Marconi
did work out the radio invention.
Teamviewer was my main program for remote control of my station via internet since a few years. Before that I used another (spanish don't know the name anymore) provider which has stopped the remote service. The problem with the popular Teamviewer program though is that it's refresh rate is getting slower and slower every update. And they update a lot for shure. The last time I used it it took at least 5-10 seconds before I could reply on a PSK31 call. That is way too slow, especially if you want to use it for contesting. So I searched google for a remote desktop program with the best reviews on refresh rate. A couple of programs popped up and I've chosen the one with the best reviews. It's called splashtop2 and so far I'm satisfied with the refreshrate. Check the performance tab at their website, a big difference with competing remote desktop providers. Actually never had a better remote desktop program, it's simple and doesn't have that much features as Teamviewer, but for remote radiocontrol and especially digital modes it's perfect.

Through splashtop2 I installed WSPR-X on my desktop. At first I didn't see any decodes although the traces were there, and of course the time was right. Then I remembered I had a similair issue with WSPR 2 when installing it. You simply need to start the WSPR-X program again after you configured it. So I did, and it seemed to be working so far on receive. The only thing that is not clear to me is how to set the "dB" meter at the left? In the old program you need a "0" setting, but what is the best setting for WSPR-X? I tried to find it in the online guide but nothing has been written about it.

COTA PA-00007 Menkemaborg activation

The entrance of PA-00007
Well, I managed to get 1 hour free time to do the activation from PA-00007 Menkemaborg at the village of Uithuizen. I drove there and had to do some groceries first for my XYL. Then parked the car at the parking lot near the castle and setup the mobile antenna. It was a cold day I think about -3 C and I had to remove  the ice from the car roof first before I could place the magnetmount. The antenna had a good SWR instantly like always  and I started to give CQ on 14.251 SSB. The first 22 minutes went well I worked 13 stations. But then there was some QRM and nobody came back to my CQ. Just 22 minutes later SQ5MRI came back and spotted me on the DX cluster, some stations followed. In the end I made 19 QSOs from 10 DXCC. Not good and not bad considering I worked mobile and QRP. I just used my own call and not with /P/QRP behind it to keep things simple. Now I need to make a nice QSL for eQSL and process the log. Most important I had some fun. This was my first SOTA activation. To make the PA-00007 valid I need to make at least 50 QSOs so I will activate this castle a couple of times. The lucky thing is that my job is within 1 km from this castle so I can easily step into the car a lunchbreak and make some contacts. That will say if I'm taking the car to my job, most of the time I take the bicycle...I'll do my best to make these 50 QSOs to validate this castle the next couple of weeks.

The mobile station...

5th anniversary WCA and JT-Alert

According to the COTA-PA website this weekend is the 5th anniversary of the World Castle Award. I don't know if it is populair but I want to activate castle PA00007 Menkemaborg in Uithuizen. It will be a one hour activation only and I will be QRP from the car. Time approx. 10-11 UTC and I think I will choose 20m. I'll bring a 10m mobile antenna with me as well, if propagation is good I try 10m too.

I installed JT-Alert this evening. I always had the impression you need DX Keeper in order to run it. Don't know where I read that. But after a post from G4ILO it was clear I had to try it. Really a must have when you plan to do a lot of JT65A and want to do other things as well in the mean time. JT-Alert is highly configurable, it just intigrates with JT65-HF and it logs to HRD. As a matter of fact I integrated a searchable log in the left bar of this blog. Very handy. The only thing with logging from JT-Alert to HRD is that HRD does not automatic update the log to HRDLog.net. But that could be just a configuration error from my side.

Super DX....from my bicycle

Well, just kidding actually. But it was a nice distance. According to their website the dutch coversity network is still down. Though I manage to open a repeater on the 70cm uplink with my small Baofeng UV-3R HT from the bicycle. So I did give a CQ yesterday when cycling home from work. It was cold -5 C and I called a couple of CQs before. Suddenly PA3FRI Martin replied, he told he was in the car on the dike driving near Enkhuizen. See the map. It's my best DX with the UV-3R till now with a little help of course of a repeater ;-)

Grapje natuurlijk.

My 2 language blog continues

I've held a survey about this 2 language blog the last 2 weeks. I think I'm one of the few that don't let the translate robots do their work but translate it all by myself. I don't really translate actually, most of my post I write orginally in english and make a dutch version later, sometimes the other way around. It costs me some extra time but this way it's all good readable in both english as dutch. The advantage is that I get some exercise in english. Although there will be a lot of language errors in it. This blog is part of my radiohobby and sometimes also a release of my thoughts. There are so many ideas I have about this hobby and more then half of it can't be really made. I hope some of the readers will pick up some of the ideas and continue experimenting with it. Then at least I have the feeling I don't do it for nothing.

This is the outcome of the survey:

I was active with 17m WSPR 1W from the horizontal loop ths afternoon. Again it occured to me that I receive more then I can reach with my 1W. Do I have a very good QTH with less noise or is my receiver that good? I don't know, but the horizontal loop of course is not a good DX antenna with a low angle of radiation. Besides that most stations are using a "QRO" power of 5W these days.

WSPR heard in with 1W results

160m the digital way

I connected the antennatuner and cable to the Icom this evening. Lucky enough all works. Well, does it? No, the desktop computer I seldom switch on of course had to update after such a long time. And Windows is not the fasted. Anyway, I switched on JT9-1 and on 1838 KHz 1400Hz I gave some CQ fo about 15 minutes. I checked in on HAMspots and Obriensweb to spot myself but no responses at all. Though there is a lot of JT65 and PSK31 activity around. I switched over to PSK31 and worked SP3CMX, OZ3AEV, DK2CH, DC2WH. After I heard a RTTY signal I took my chance to work my first ever RTTY QSO on 160m with DF8AA. No shocking DX but at least a first for me. And again it was clear to me that not everyone has good RX on 160m as I didn't get trough at a few on PSK although I was working with 25W which is the highest power I use on PSK. While writing this blog I was CQing on JT65. And there was previously on JT9 worked YL2CA again answering my call. The QSO went a little difficult due to a wrong RX audiosetting on my side. After correction we finished the QSO without problems. Then I tried my luck with real DX to UA9CR, but he didn't receive me after trying several times. YO2LGK, DF9XS, G0OXY and OE7GJ came by and we made the QSO.  All with all a fun evening with digimode on 160m..

All with all I had fun this evening with digimode on 160mAlles bij elkaar toch nog een leuke digitale 160m avond.

Free energy

One of my previous free energy QSL cards
May be I'm on thin ice now with this post. My interest in free energie is there since a long time. It's no obsession but I'm trying to find ways to obtain free energy or at least cheaper energy. Till now I've found nothing that is absolutely free. If you're about to buy a solarcell like I did you probabely save some money on the bill you pay to your electricity provider. The investment in the solarcell, charger and battery will be payed over a long time and then the energy you get is free. Though a solarcell and battery have no eternal life, so you have to invest again and that's not free at all. You can find a lot of inventions on the internet these days, some of them are interesting some are not. A free energy solution for me is a device that makes free energy and store it in fact for ever without the need of investments for maintenance. Just like a pertetual motion.

Nikola Tesla the great (and forgotten) inventor came close to a solution probabely, or not? It seems the US government did confiscate all his notes and lots of his patents so they could probabely make a profit out of it. At least his work needs at least a great inventor to complete it I think. Tesla was a interesting guy as he made machines in his barin and even tested them in his thoughts. Most of the inventions he made were exactly doing what he had though of them, you can find a  whole lot of inventions on the internet made by him. A whole lot of inventions not made by him as well. But dicover free energy? Well, he probabely didn't it as well. Or did he? In 1895 he had a big fire at his lab in New York and many of his manuscript, notes and equipment was lost. Who knows he was closer to the solution as we think today!

Despite my scepsis on free energy I found a lot of inventions that keep my thought towards it. Now and then I want to describe some of them. May be we will have an idea with all of us to find some free energy.

More about Nikola Tesla en a good page to start:

Radioshack update 3 -Insulated-

Connection inside
So far so good, we are in 2013 now. Of course I've been busy with my new radioshack last couple of weeks. I made a double connection throughput for the 450 Ohm ladderline. One for the loop and one for future experiments or as spare. On the roof it's just under one of the tiles, in theory it's just a matter of lifting the tile connect the cable and place the tile again. Hopefully it will work out that way. I completely insulated the roof now with 10cm rockwool. Next thing is to build a wall between a small space above the bathroom/toilet and the shack. The space above the bathroom/toilet has a ventilating unit in it and I don't like to have that in the shack. I'll use the space just as store room and probabely store the solar powered battery there too. I want the shackdesk below the skylights and will have to make kind of a wall there as well. Stay tuned for more updates...

Connection outside (sorry for the blurry photo)

Work in progress...
Have I mentioned the view from the new shack?
