CQWW and timemanagement

A clean radio desk
Well, thinking about stopping is not the same is really doing it. I asked myself if this is a dip, and I think it was. I didn´t expect so many comments though, thanks to you all. Even some via e-mail. And did get very usefull tips as well, some better then others. Most valuable was the one I got from Hans PE1BVQ, he mentioned something my XYL (or station manager whatever we prefer) did mention to me as well. It's called timemanagement. The problem is that I want too many things with too little free time. So I have to manage my time and make a plan what exactly to do at what day, the idea is that it will give me some inner calm as well. Till now I wanted to satisfy the household and family, read all the blogs, write blogs, answering all my e-mail, make some contacts on the radio, build some kits and build a radioshack all at the same time. I realize now that isn't possible, everything went wrong and nothing finished. At the end there is no time at all for the actual hobby, making contacts via radio.

So, this is what I do and did already last weekend. I make a schedule at Sunday for every day in the week, I got 2 hours of free time every day normally. I will try to do this every week. In weekends if possible I make a scheme in the morning. I tried last weekend and it did work out, my XYL and I exactly knew when I was taking time for the hobby. And actually at the end we accomplished more work then we planned to do for this weekend. Saturday morning we cleaned the temporarely radioshack with the 3 of us. That worked surprisingly well and fast. After coffee and some household tasks I attended the CQWW DX contest for 1 hour and made about 50 QSO's. Then there were other things to do inside and outside the house. We did some necessary work outside to prepare for winter till tea. After that I surprisingly had another hour for the contest and of course some hours at night. Sunday went surprisingly well and I had some hours to spend for the radio. The CQWW DX contest was really fun although the propagation seemed to be not that good as last year. I heard a lot of DX I could not work like stations from New Zealand, Australia and Vietnam. On 40m Japan was very loud but not workable, but I did work at least 2 stations from USA on 40. No new DXCC for me this time. Best DX on 10m was VR2EH in Hong Kong. A lot of stations seemed to be deaf, sorry to write but for instance I heard W3LPL on all bands exept 160m but whatever I tried he didn't hear me despite his big signal on my side. The same with a lot of other stations, big signals but no ears at all.

Why I should quit the radio hobby

Where is my radio?
A shocking title. Yes. I've been thinking about quitting the HAM radio hobby for the time being the last couple of weeks. At least it's just a hobby and a way to spend time. Time which I absolutely don't have at the moment. The preliminary shack is a big mess and there is actually no room for my radio gear at the moment. Except for it to pack in the original boxes and store it with the other things we don't have room for at this moment. The antennamast is still down in the garden waiting for better times already for almost 5 years at the moment. There is  no time and money to set it up again at the moment. Then my new shack, I had only 45 minutes to work on it last weekend. That way it will take at least a year or longer to install all the equipment and be on the air again. Still waiting for more then a year now are the W5OLF WSPR TX kit and the PA1B design attenuator which I have the parts for. I still didn't finish my simple USB soundcard modem, only solved the small TX problem. Besides the time issue we probabely get into financial problems the next years, all because of the crisis and things getting very expensive these days. Last year we spend 200 KWh extra on our normal electricity consumption. Of course this is all my fault because of my energy wasting radio hobby. And yes I think that could be, having the radio and computer sometimes switched on 24 hours  for several days only to get a few new WSPR spots. This means I have to search for another (energy) solution for the new radio shack if I want to continue this hobby and enjoy for instance WSPR. I have a 45 hour job, more then 55 hours together with the time that I travel to get there and back. When I come home familylife is at the first place. After that I'm too tired to switch the radio on to listen or make a QSO before we go to bed. Most of the time I read some e-mail and blogs in the evening although I do that also in lunchbreak on the job. I don't know if it is valuable to continue with this hobby? I read about great propagation on 10m, great DXpeditions that are easy to work and very good WSPR results lately. Things I cannot take part in at the moment. I can only read and dream about it. A lot of HAM radio amateurs quit the hobby when they get kids and have to work hard earning money. Probabely that time has come for me! Probabely I write that I came back to the hobby in about 10 years?  I'll sleep a couple of nights to think about it. May be it's just a small dip...

Een schokkende titel. Ja.

HAM radio cat

I came across this video on youtube. A cat tuning 40m...never got one of my cats doing this. Great video!

Geweldig stukje!

Radioshack update 1....upstairs upstairs!

Although missing some nice 10m DX from what I read on other blogs I've been busy with the new and permanent  radioshack the last few days. I've been installing the new stairs and did dismantle the old one. The previous house owner has been a hobby steel constructor so it seems, there was a complete liftsystem build in from steel. Later he converted it and constructed a steel stair with sliding rail and counterbalance. Very ingenious but not really my idea of it. Next will be fixing the hole in the floor were the previous stair/lift was mounted and then isolation of the roof.

World Wide Radio Tele TYpe contest

Recently I came across my old RTTY hamcom modem when cleaning my garage. Built from scrap parts and inspired by Peter PA1SDB at the time we were both experimenting on CB. I even remember we transmitted kind of a RTTY bulletin on CB every sundayevening at that time. And after we got our licenses we regulary were found on the 2 Meter band receiving the local World Link RTTY bulletin by PA3ESF. Most of the HAMs involved used software called Intercom by PA3BYZ at that time. All nice RTTY memories for me, but things can get more crazy as before my first efforts with RTTY and before my time there were the old mechanical  Telex machines. There are still HAMs like PE1ARD Arnold who have these telex machines working and use them in their radioshacks, incredible! Find a video here: http://youtu.be/ku_JlxlTLIA and take a look at around 10:40. And so....we're doing a RTTY contest these days on HF. A antique mode used to do contest inspired by the past I think. As there is a large number of stations participating it is very populair. not really my mode outside contesting, I prefer something modern like PSK or JT65. Most interesting RTTY contest is probabely last weekends CQWW RTTY contest which has lots of DX stations that participate. Unfortenately I had less time Saturday and in the evening 10 and 15m were closed. So I made some QSOs on 80, 40 and 20m. Sunday was better and I could attend the shack in the morning with my harmonic Anneli. When starting the computer I checked the 11m band as always to check propagation possebilities on 10m. I heard an old CB radio friend and made a QSO with him first. After that I moved to 10m and made my first QSO to Japan, the next station was my neighbourstation PA0O Jaap. I made a small sked with Jaap on 70cm FM, Jaap told me that propagation would be not as good as saturday because of a magnetic storm. He told me also he heard Hawaii and Guam on 10m, but it was hard to make the QSO because of the pile-ups. So unfortunate I thought I was too late for DX....well after all I think I did make some:

10m RTTY most interesting DX worked: JR4GPA Japan, KG6DX Guam, NH2T Guam, P49X Aruba, FM5CD Martinique, FR5GS Reunion isl., AY8A Argentina, CW90A Uruquay, 4M5IR Venezuela, HK1R Colombia, HI8PLE Dominican Rep., PY2NY Brazil and of course lots of USA and Canada both east and west coast.
