Social media...a split world

I still think social media is a good way to promote your blog. It's a sign of the time I think. In the past you only met other HAMs on the radio. Now, you have a better chance to meet them on the "net". I won't do much advertising in reverse. You'll never find twitters, facebook comments or something like that here. Though you are able to make a comment on Facebook of course. I migrated my blog to Google+ now whatever it means. It's kind of a Google "facebook" or so it certainly looks like it. Till now I am promoting my blog on Facebook, Twitter, CQfriends, Ham Radio Nation and Google+. Sometimes I try to make a post on Amateurradio.com, though the last one takes a lot of time. The problem is that the webmaster only accepts English written posts. And I always write in English/Dutch so I have to edit the messages and publish them myself instead of automatic insert via a RSS feed. Anyway, I know from reading other blogs that there has been a lot of arguing about social media. I think everyone has to decide for their own what to do and respects anyones choice. But one thing is for shure if you begin with social media, check you privacy settings. Although.....what is privacy after you begin with it?

Now another thing I notice more and more, not only considering social media but "new" technology in general. The world is getting split. Those who are able to use new gadgets and those who are not able to or not want to. You always have a choice of course don't you? I realized that the choice is getting harder after reading a dutch magazine, it had QR codes on almost every page. What to do with it when you don't have the ability to scan those? I can assure you I don't have a smartphone because I simply cannot afford it and internet on a smartphone is ridiculous expensive. And I'm not the only one not having such a gadget, unfortenately some people don't realize that. Now, these days more and more banks, shops and services are doing business via the internet. Actually shops next to you in the street are closing because of this. What to do if those who are not able to or willing to pay for a internet connection want to do some shopping? If they financially can? I know a lot of people that have no interest at all in computers, even haven't got any. It's getting harder for these people as the remaining shops will be always more expensive compared to a shop on internet, actually that's already the case. I wonder what the future brings with this "new" technology? Certainly a split world...

Update 26-Sept-2012: I just migrated back from Google+ again to Blogger. The problem is that my callsign was not displayed in blogger comments. I could not find a way to change that in Google+.

Reminds me of what cell phones did to ham radio repeaters. I have listened to repeaters that used to be busy almost all the time and now, not a peep. Technology has been on ham radios coat tails for years and in many instances, we may have had something to do with it! Look at the rigs today compared to the rigs of yesteryear. I think social media can be helpful but also harmful. I've not ventured onto Google+ but I do use facebook and twitter. All I know is, as long as I can key Morse Code, I'm happy using such an old form of communication with my modern radio.

Hi Bas. I'm not into the social media thing. I did open a Facebook account some time ago, but never returned to it. I get e-mail reminders that people I don't know have posted new pictures of themselves on Facebook. The e-mail goes into the trash. I don't even remember my password to sign in and don't want to. I do look at Twitter occasionally to read the QRP listings. Other than reading the ham blogs and calling my sister in the States for news, my everyday communication is via cw amateur radio.

Good morning Bas, I do have a facebook and twitter account but they are not linked to my blog at all. I did post the other week about linking my blog and these accounts. I had lots of feedback regarding Trojans and viruses that can be carried through this media and into my blog and others. Now the accounts are all separate. Speaking of the Internet I firmly believe it should be free!! with all the advertising that is done I feel these companies can underwrite the cost of the net and we could view it for free.....or let us pay and get rid of all the ad's.

Hi Phil, cell phones did harm radio repeaters and radio in general. I think we need to try preserve best of both worlds. But still some "world" are out of reach for some people. 73, Bas PE4BAS

Hi Dick, you can probabely get your password by e-mail so you can delete your Facebook account. I like the way you communicate most of the time. I'm still not able to decode CW by ear and brain. Wish to learn it sometime, another sign of time.....no time. Or not willing to make time...73, Bas PE4BAS

Good idea Mike, that would be a nice thing. They should also donate a new computer every year to people that can't pay for it. Btw I did read your article related to social media.I never heard of viruses that can infect your blog through a advertisement of social media. But never say never, everything is possible on the net. So far I never had any problems related to that. 73, Bas PE4BAS

PE4BAS, Bas said...

73, Bas

Hi Bas, I have used social media sites since they began and have found that unlike radio they soon get boring, I cant be bothered with too much time spent typing when I could be surfing the huge variety of bands available to us instead. I do like watching youtube videos and reading blogs of interest and think that the net is something worth having. I enjoy contributing But! If I had to give anything up to save some cash it would be the internet rather than my ham radio gear.

PE4BAS, Bas said...

Hi Simon, I think you're absolutely right about that. I enjoy radio a lot more then social media sites. If I could I would not spend much time on social media etc. though I haven't got radio in our living room like you. But in the end we should all be communicating on the radio as radioamateurs and not on the internet....73, Bas

Bas, I'm not a big Twitter fan, but I certainly use Facebook and YouTube to promote my radio activities. I think the choice in the end is down to the individual but it's hard to live life these days without computers, internet and smart phones!

Hello Anthony, indeed is it hard to live life without all those gadgets these days. But the message I actually want to give is that not everyone can participate. Own choice or not! 73 Bas
