What's going on at PE4BAS

Well, what's going on here. Busy as usual. Trying to get the endfed up in the spare minutes I have. But it doesn't work. Although  followed the instructions found here I couldn't even get a close match at 28MHz. However at 10MHz the SWR is 1,5:1. Something has to be wrong, probabely the trail-and-error method I used to wind the coil calculated with a program called mini Ring Core Calculator . Time to build and try another matchbox, it can't be that hard. This time I want to use my new L/C meter to make a proper coil and capacitor. Oh my, what's going on with it? Suddenly the display contrast is altered. And there is no way to change it. Anyone has an idea? I tried all kind of button combinations to find a hidden feature and did take a look inside the meter to examine any broken parts or a kind of reset button. But nothing can be found. The meter is working though but hard to read. I asked this question on a hamradio forum and got a possible solution from Tjalling PE1RQM. He suggested to cut the line to pin 3 of the display and solder a adjustable resistor to adjust the contrast. But looking at the double side printboard with SMD components and tiny connections I don't think that is possible, at least for me.
Original without the skylights, like a dungeon!
In the meantime we cleaned the attic on the backside of the house that is going to be my new and permanent shack. It's a old attic built about 75 years ago. Not isolated and very dark. So we had to change that. I arranged two skylights and had them placed. The first step towards the new shack is made. I will have a great view on the garden and my antennas from this new room. But before I'll sit down behind my radio and enjoy there is a lot of work that has to be done. I'll keep you all updated.

Daar moest dus verandering in komen.

Bas, won't it be very hot up there in the summer?

Hello John, the skylights are facing north so I never get sun into the shack. Besides that I will isolate the roof with thick insulation. On the south side part of the roof there is the house, so not much sun there either. 73, Bas

If your insulation material will be as good as the stuff my land lord recently installed here (foam with aluminum foil), you'll get a nice Faraday Cage, too.

;)

Good idea Hans. However that is very expensive. I prefer normal rockwool. But things can change. There are so many things to isolate with, it's just a matter of costs. 73, Bas

Bas,

Hallo Bas, mooie dakramen.
73, Bert

Good morning Bas, looks like a very nice space in the attic and lots can be done with it Im sure. I also have a concern for the summers...maybe your summers are not as hot as ours but the attic here can get to dangerous temps in the summer. As for SMD's I had my fun with those on my K3. I had to remove one to replace it with one just a little smaller and the first one was the size of an ANT!!!! Yes those components can be a challenge for sure.
Have a good weekend and keep us posted on how the attic shack is going.

73, Bas

Hello Mike, as always the attic will be a little warmer then downstairs. If I really want it cool I should make a shack in the basement. Unfortenately I don't have a nice view over the garden then. Well we sometimes have hot days in summer, those days are not the time to be in the shack. My main concern will be how the warm the shac in winter as I will not have any heating in it. It will be a small and well isolated shack, I gamble that my equipment will have enough heat to warm it. I remember reading something in your blog about a special device you use for unsoldering SMD components, that and a magnifier glas would be at least necessary. 73, Bas

73, Bas

Hi Bas:
Always of interest to see a new project get off the ground especially with radios, shacks - we have loft insulating material called thinsulate, it is made of VERY thin layers of fibers and foil (appx 30 layers) it was developed from nasa space flights and is very light - we have just had it installed in our new extension.

Look forward to next update 73' Peter

Hello Peter, we know thinsulate from winter clothing. Didn't know it is available for house insulating projects as well. Though I think it's just more expensive then rockwool, the only advantage is that it's thin I think. BTW, I also consider TonZon foil for wall insulation which is a dutch product: http://www.tonzon.nl/ I use their foil behind my central heating radiators and it actually works. 73, Bas
