Northern Radio Rally 2011 (NAT 2011)

The only radio rally that I'm visiting actually, this year it was ast Saturday. Not too big and more important is a eyeball QSO with fellow HAMs. Though most of the traders would of course get some money out of it. Not only were there traders but also some information stands. The first one was from top QRP contester and QSL collector PA1AT, there were some QSL's waiting for me as he is also QSL region manager. As always there are a lot of nice (historic) QSL cards to see. I made a photograph of the original first QSL from the first licensed radio amateur in the Netherlands PA0BZ issued 19-Aug.-1929. I met a lot of fellow radioamateurs, known both from "on air" QSOs and from our local radio club. I even met my old radiofriend Bert which is starring in my video as  the station which I talked to on CB many years ago, he was telling me that he is busy to get his license. I also met another radioamateur and discussed some digital modes getting to the WSPR subject he was telling me that he never heard of it, hard to believe but true. Anyway, I saved some money to buy some interesting radio equipment and so I did.First of all I bought some PL connectors and a plug to connect my deskmike to the yaesu. Most important was the cheap metal box to make the PA1B attenuator, I found a suitable one for 1 euro. Searching for a Imax2000 which I strange enough still cannot find on this radiorally there was something that catched my eye. A beautifull second hand WELZ SP-15M SWR/PWR meter with attached an WELZ AC-38M antennatuner, great for QRP as the meter has 3 choices of power 2,5W, 20W and 200W. Both devices are fully metal and switches and knobs are high quality. I couldn't resist to buy it (probabely give too much for it), I otherwise regret it. I bought some other items as well but will write about that in another article.

QRP glory

After my QRP struggle last week I thought this was a nice title for some glorious results with QRP. I got the results from last years PA-beker contest and found out I became second in the SSB QRP section. Fellow blogger PC4T became 5th in the same section (congrats Paul). Since PA1AT was both nr.1 in SSB and CW I was curious at his equipment. He uses a FT-817 and 23 Mtr wire on 6 Mtr above the ground and a autotuner. Got me thinking if my loop is too high above the ground or I do not have the operating skills or practise he got. Next year I'll try another strategy...

QRP struggle

Monitoring and transmitting WSPR on 12m last 2 days. QRP with 500mW. First day on the loop antenna I only received IW1PAK and M1AVV, they were not QRP !
Second day on my vertical, nothing....Both days I was not received by anyone. That brings back memories of calling every evening for over a week ending in a few short QSOs only. QRP is not always succes, it can be a struggle. I think this is not the best time to do 12m QRP, better wait till the ES season starts and try it again.

10m expectations

Once, long time ago....
After reading some very nice reports about WSPR on 10 meter I decided to monitor for a few days. But my expectations were too high. Propagation was not as good as the days before I was monitoring. Although I was reported at 4Z4TJ (Israel) and OY1OF (Faroer Isl.) with my 1 Watt on the vertical. Receiving went better I reported V53ARC, VK4YEH, PU2MWD,  FR1GZ and  VK6TQ as DX and a few other Dutch and European stations as well most of them TX with 2-5 Watt. Tomorrow starts a 12 meter QRP activity for 2 days. I don't have too much expectations this time but will try with 500mW, you never know...

Video impression...

A short impression of my station before the PA-beker 2010 contest starring my new FT-817, I did took part in the QRP section with 5 Watts. Attached is also a short impression of my station before the PACC 2011. The plan was to shoot more video, but since I was so concentrated  on the pile-ups and searching for multipliers between them I just forgot to press the button so now and then. I seriously thought about taking part in the QRP section of the PACC, but since it is a mixed mode section I choose the low power SSB section in the end.

PACC 2011 story & results

Sorry for waiting, but finally I got some time to write my story about the PACC this year. First of all the PACC contest is the most important contest here in the Netherlands. Rule nr. 1 is that all stations can only make contact with us dutch stations, that gives some advantages. I think every dutch radioamateur should take part in this contest if not for competion then just for fun. But of course everyone should decide that for them self. Anyway, I started the contest with the confidence I would break my last year score, but after 15 minutes I only made one QSO with Russia and all my confidence was gone. Like last year I started on 10m and 15m and there was not much to do there, next year I better look at 20m as well or even start the contest there. The first hours went slowly though I made a very nice second multiplier on 10m to southern Zambia 9J2GS Gertjan (Dutch guy) a new DXCC as well for me. I actually did quite a number of QSO's on 160m, I was very surprised as I had to do it with the vertical and tuning tooks a long time. But best was of course the 80m en 40m band with my horizontal loop, this year there was even a reply from Canada and USA on my CQ on those bands. Searching for multipliers resulted in some nice DX with TJ9PF, FM1HM & FM4LV on 40m I just left them in my PACC log, but if they will count as multipliers? If not, it doesn't matter to me, a good score is nice but a new DXCC is better. I decided to get some sleep when calling CQ would result in no station answering within 10 minutes, that was around 4:00 UTC in the morning. At 6:00 UTC I woke up and started calling again resulting in a slow pile-up. Actually never got the pile-ups like last year except for the last 10 minutes of the contest, like a miracle everyone did seem to hear me then! At the end I counted 552 QSOs from 122 multipliers, not bad and luckely I did beat the score from last year. Now, I hope it will result in a better place time will tell....

Log Analysis PACC 2011 PE4BAS

DX:
10m: 9J2GS (Zambia)
15m: A61ZX (UAE), K1JB (USA), TJ3AY (Cameroon), VE3KZ (Canada)
20m: K3ZO (USA), PT7CB (Brazil), VA3AAG (Canada), YB0MWM (Indonesia)
40m: K3ZO (USA), TJ9PF (Cameroon), FM1HM (Martinique Isl.)
80m: N1BCL (USA), VE1ZA (Canada)

PI4H PACC contest QTH preview

I had the chance to visit the PI4H contest QTH. They had some bad luck as well with the storm and lost some antennas and masts. But most is repaired and ready to go. Unfortenately the 40m moxon did not make it, hopefully next year they have a bit more luck with the weather before the PACC. Less then a day to go for the PACC 2011 to start...

Antenna up again, ready for the PACC

It's so difficult to photograph my antennas due to the size of the loop. On the photo you see my W2000 3 band antenna, the multiband vertical and around it about half of the horizontal loop. This is the view from the south direction. Luckely the vertical is up again and not damaged, the autotuner still  does it's job. I did a short test on 80m with the voicekeyer, it seems the shorter cable did the trick. The radio can be used with full power again and monitoring with my FT817 the modulation is not distorted anymore. At least I solved one problem from last year, the other one concerns the use of a second screen to monitor the DX cluster. Hope to solve that next year. I'm ready for the PACC 2011, 1 day to go...

Voicekeyer troubles and FoF2 adventures

The voicekeyer is now build in the long awaiting box. I tested it yesterday in the RSGB 80m CC Contest. But still I have the same LFD problems as before. It's very annoying as the radio switches off when transmitting full power. Seems there is a problem with the cable from the voicekeyer to the radio as I can solve 80 percent when I pick it up with my hands. I'll try to shorten the cable today and will try it again this evening.  Hope I can solve it before the PACC. To get in the mood I participated in the EPC WWDX PSK63 contest and the XE RTTY contest last weekend. But propagation was very bad and I made only a few QSO, not even heard a Mexican station. A very strange thing occured to me when I was busy with the RSGB CC contest on 80m sundayevening. I got lots of very good reports, telling me I had a very strong signal. Then suddenly all British stations dissapeared, I only heard a few very weak almost not readable. Tuning over 80m I only heard some Italians talking to Japan (Japan not readable), the rest was very quiet like a total black-out. At first I thought that my horizontal loop was finally on the ground as there was still a lot of wind. But it was not like that, I think it was just a dissapearance of the F2 layer. When I took a view on my blog in the sidebar I saw a FoF2 of 2,3 MHz with a range of 175 Km. Searching on google this is the explanation of FoF2: maximum radio frequency that can be reflected by the F2-region of the ionosphere at vertical incidence (that is, when the signal is transmitted straight up into the ionosphere). And it happens NVIS that's what my loop is designed for....
Just 3 days to go till the PACC.

Antennamast repairs

Made some photos from the damage and repaired mast section, sorry not real quality. Repair involved a 25mm drill and some perseverance. I use an extra alu tube to strengthen the whole thing. Hope to assemble everything this week and cross my fingers for the antenna and autotuner. Hope they are not damaged, but can only find out when the whole installation is up on the mast.

Storm damage at PE4BAS

Antenna on the ground.
The mast still standing, but damaged.
We had some strong winds here at the coast last night. Unfortenately my vertical broke off the mast at the weakest point. The horizontal loop on the fiberglass poles is still holding, hope it will stay like that.
Luckely it seems to be the autotuner and antenna itself are not damaged. But I need to get it up before next weekend when the PACC is on. As it felt over the versatower it reminds me I should do a request for a building permit to get the thing up. I would never happen when the vertical was on that tower. Although....you never know...at least I now know what to do next week. Yesterday I did drive near the contestlocation of PI4H where my fellow club members have been building antennas for the upcoming PACC. Unfortenately they have a lot of damage as well.

Get ready for.....PACC 2011

This is how I operated my voicekeyer...
Slowly I need to get ready for the PACC. There is one thing I really need to do and that is to build the voicekeyer in a box. I will take care of that for shure. There is only 8 days to go and actually I did not exercise. So I need to do at least one contest this weekend to get in the mood....

Meanwhile I check propagation with WSPR so now and then. Very good results with only 1W today especially around the greyzone. So, that will be the time to hunt multipliers in the PACC contest.
I had the opportunity to add a new 20m DXCC on WSPR today which was XV4TUJ in Vietnam.  That he received my 1W signal is a miracle, but even more amazing was that I received his 0,5W signal !!

2011-02-03 15:30  XV4TUJ 14.097140  -24  OK20ua0.5  PE4BAS JO33jk9696  324
