My results in the 10m ARRL contest

My worst 10m ARRL contest of all time. What can I say I only made 5 QSO ! If I had more time to be on the radio this could be a bit better of course because propagation was not that bad. But when I had time to be on the radio most of the time I only heard noise. Watching the DX cluster I saw most QSOs were made on CW. But occasional a few were able to reach USA on phone even from the Netherlands. I noticed some big gun contesters  from the US were yelling "10m open to europe" on the DX cluster but europe is large and propagation in France, Italy and Spain is always good no matter what band you are. Anyway, with my WSPR monitoring in mind I knew I had to be on the radio early to work something. So together with my daughter Anneli I worked 5B4AIF & R7NA  around 9:30 UTC and ZS6BRZ at 10:40 UTC on Saturday. I guess that would bring me in the multi-op section though Anneli is not licensed yet and can't talk as well ;-) At Sunday I worked ZC4LI at 9:19 UTC his signal was booming and 5 minutes later it was all gone, no other station was heard after that QSO. I tried to hear something early in the afternoon and listened to the CW part as well, the only signal I could hear was PA0O a neighbourstation. I  made my only CW contact with him at decided to stop then. After all I think it was not that bad DX for just a multiband vertical. Better luck next year.......

Good morning Bas, I tried the 10 meter contest over this way. Not sure if conditions were not great or I was just on at the wrong times. The band was absent of any stations so it was off to the work bench to build some stuff. I have noticed that 40 meters is hopping. I am going to put a dipole in the attic consisting of two mobile whips. See how that goes but at least it will get me on 40 meters.

Hi Mike, I was monitoring 40m PSK yesterday and propagation seems to be very good in the direction east-west. Early in the evening I spotted several USA stations. Very curious if the dipole works. Otherwise the dipole G4ILO uses on his attic could be something for you.

Hallo Bas, eeuwige ruisvelden. Leuke woordspeling.

Succes!

Moi Bas,

Hier ook even geluisterd op de 10m zo af en toe maar hier alleen Jaap even gehoord in cw voor de rest niks op mijn stuk draad.

Oddly enough, it was my best. It was beyond my expectations for sure. With that said, I can only hope next year will be bigger and better! Europe and more DXCC countries on 10 meters would be the icing on the cake!

@Phil, the times that Europe will come through in Alaska are coming. But it could be in about another 11 years.

Hi Bas,
yes propagation wasn't very well.I did monitor the Clusters the whole day and looked and listened over the band.
For me the total came to 26 QSO's logged.I also got Jaap,PA0O,in CW.
Best DX for me was also ZS6BRZ who was that time real 5/8.Only NA i did hear was a VY2 on CW,but too low to work.

Got a very big suprise yesterday by the post...ARRL Award for the 10M Contest 2009.I was 1st in the Low Power. For sure not this year again.

Didn't feel much for contesting this weekend, due what happend friday. But it's also something to get your head on other things...

Saturday had more propagation to east EU and even E21YDP maybe more but I did not spend to much time ... Fault! sunday it ws just noise with sometimes a short ES / burst like openings to big guns in EU. But in the afternoon some spotty openings to USA. VY2ZM heard cqcqcq weak long time hard to get him even with the Acom1000
I was doing some homeimprovement and left the RX on 28001 VY2ZM got stronger and then even here in JO33hg some W's where workable.
. I think you had to be there all day to not miss the very few short openings like VP5CW just 579 for a few minutes.
Next time must have a beam... that is wat I'm saying some years now.... 73 Jaap PA0O

Bas, I saw on the DX cluster where several Europeans and US stations were working each other, but I never heard EU even once. I listened to a "superstation" near me (NR5M) for a while and heard him working EU repeatedly - I couldn't even hear a whisper from those he worked even though we had identical prop conditions. Antennas make all the difference in both bad condx and good!
