Experimental V4 Chat Sked with PE2KM

More then a decade ago there were two guys with packetradio, one on a Island and one nearby on the coast. They found each other on the airwaves and had a chat on converse mode almost every evening. Nice story isn't it. It actually really happened, I was the one on the coast and the other guy was Kees (now PE2KM) who was living on Schiermonnikoog Isl. at that time. I think we made chats via packetradio on CB for over a year. Several years ago we discovered we both obtained our licenses and so now and then we contact each other on 80m and via e-mail. Reading about V4 Chat it did bring old memories back, it would be great to have a chat again. Of course PSK is a option, but V4 is more similair to packet converse mode. Anyone can join the chat very uncomplicated that's the nice thing but could be also very chaotic. Anyway, I had a sked with Kees yesterday evening to see how this "robust" mode is behaving. I did see his signal in the waterfall very clearly, but V4 fails to decode. The same with G4VCG who joined the chat. Experimenting with the audio input gave some better results when setting it just before the red stripe in the rcv level meter. Squelch is also not yet behaving like it should as  the program already transmits before the received signal in the waterfall was over. It doesn't matter as the program is under development. It was a nice experiment though, and I hope to see the program growing within time. Is it a interesting mode for those who want to DX with QRP for instance? I don't know, it first should prove itself to be better as PSK or Olivia under difficult circumstances. Till now I think the best program for DX with QRP is JT65-HF. The problem with that program though is the lack of chat or text possebilities.

My results in the 10m ARRL contest

My worst 10m ARRL contest of all time. What can I say I only made 5 QSO ! If I had more time to be on the radio this could be a bit better of course because propagation was not that bad. But when I had time to be on the radio most of the time I only heard noise. Watching the DX cluster I saw most QSOs were made on CW. But occasional a few were able to reach USA on phone even from the Netherlands. I noticed some big gun contesters  from the US were yelling "10m open to europe" on the DX cluster but europe is large and propagation in France, Italy and Spain is always good no matter what band you are. Anyway, with my WSPR monitoring in mind I knew I had to be on the radio early to work something. So together with my daughter Anneli I worked 5B4AIF & R7NA  around 9:30 UTC and ZS6BRZ at 10:40 UTC on Saturday. I guess that would bring me in the multi-op section though Anneli is not licensed yet and can't talk as well ;-) At Sunday I worked ZC4LI at 9:19 UTC his signal was booming and 5 minutes later it was all gone, no other station was heard after that QSO. I tried to hear something early in the afternoon and listened to the CW part as well, the only signal I could hear was PA0O a neighbourstation. I  made my only CW contact with him at decided to stop then. After all I think it was not that bad DX for just a multiband vertical. Better luck next year.......

10m WSPR results just before the ARRL 10m contest this weekend

Frozen antenna, not cold enough
 to reach Alaska
Watching the 10m airwaves for a few days now did get me a small insight in the propagation expected in the weekend. I hope the ARRL 10m contest will give some surprises like last years opening to South America. But the results from the last few days monitoring  10m by WSPR are not promising. Wednesday I was surprised when my 1W signal was heard in Israel by 4Z4TJ around 9:00 UTC and Faroer Isl. by OY1OF. I received FR1GZ very regulary during the day. Thursday I forgot to switch on the audio, so transmission was only made in the evening. I received FR1GZ again over the day, it seems I have a daily path to Reunion Isl. these days. Then today my 1W signal was finally spotted by FR1GZ with a reasonable signal of -12dB at 9:00 UTC this morning. In the afternoon OY1OF spotted my signal till 15:32 UTC. Well I tried to make those fancy graphics Paul PC4T made lately, but my knowledge of excel is not good enough and I stopped trying. My conclusion about the best times to join the 10m contest. In the direction south - south-east from 9:00 UTC - 10:00 UTC. In the direction north - north-west probabely fom 12:00 - 15:30 UTC. It just a guess, as propagation can not be predicted these days, and only DX not es. I saw USA was spotted in Germany by DK6UG but don't think there will be propagations that way. Very surprising is the daily path to FR1GZ and OY1OF, I am approx. in the line between them, FR1GZ is also spotted by OY1OF. OY1OF is not transmitting I think, because no one spotted him. Then I was spotted once by DK6UG, probabely airplane or back scatter. And a neighbourstation PC1CP spotted me various times. I spotted only 3 stations last 3 days, FR1GZ, PC1CP and F5KIS. Propagation in France seems to be a lot better as F5KIS was spotted by a whole list of stations.
I will be on and of the radio this weekend, keeping an eye on the Sherlock DX page to see if QSOs are possible.

Watching the airwaves on 10m

3 LEDs all OK !
Probabely some of the readers of this blog have noticed my on air status message has changed, I finally got my Yaesu FT-817 connected to HRD. I ordered a ZLP CT62 CAT modem for that, since I already use a ZLP MultiFace CAT modem for the Icom. Though the MultiFace modem is capable of connecting to all Icom and Yaesu radios with a CAT connection I needed a separate modem, so I could use the FT-817 somewhere else if I like to. The CT62 was the cheapest solution at this moment. This ZLP modem is supplied with all the cables necessary, just plug & play.  So, I thought that should not be to difficult....wrong. I connected the modem, the power LED was lit. But the PC did not recognize it at all. A bit of quick thinking led me to the conclusion that something was wrong with the supplied USB cable. So I connected the USB cable from the MutiFace modem and the problem was solved.
After reading some blogs on WSPRnet and internet a few operators had the idea to monitor 10m just before the ARRL 10m contest this weekend to get a insight in a eventual opening of the 10m band. So, I join them with 1W out of the FT-817 and see what it usefull info it will bring us. The Yaesu FT-817 is superb for WSPR use I think, compared to my Icom IC-706 it's not getting warm at all. I'm shure that means that it is consuming less power. While reading WSPRnet blogs I found another interesting website, something I was looking for. Finally someone in the person of KB9AMG has made some lists from the WSPR data. Most interesting are the 2-way WSPR contact lists. I suggest to check it out yourself.

A little tired of contesting...contest fatique

My dad can't be this tired...
Well I am a little tired of contesting these days. I miss the hunt for DX although it could be very frustrating sometimes. When I read the blog of EI2KC for instance, I think by myself what was I doing on the time he made QSOs to ZL8X. Actually I was struggling in the TARA Melee RTTY contest Saturday, a real pain to get some stations in the log and at 60 QSO I just stopped. It seems not to be a very populair contest as I found the bands to be very quiet compared to other contests. Next day I just tried for some more luck in the EPC Ukranian DX contest on PSK63, that went a lot better. Actually it was easy to generate some mini pile-ups on 15, 20, 40 and 80m. Though I didn't have much time to take part because Sinterklaas did surprise us with some nice presents and a lot of chocolate, first time for Anneli and she enjoyed it so much. We all got some nice presents, but Anneli did like the packaging paper most. Anyway, I stopped with the EPC contest at 101 contacts, more then enough for me. But why am I contesting I asked myself this weekend.  I enjoy it very much, but it consumes a lot of time and I would like to do other things with radio as well. The advantage of contesting is that it is in the weekend, and since I got a minimum of spare time through the week it is my opportunity to work some stations and catch a occasional DX. Then, since a few years I joined the "Afdelingscompetitie" (Dutch national competition) a competition between divisions of the VERON. Every 25 QSO in any contest on HF will give 1 point till 100 QSO after that it will give 1 point for every 50 QSO. For our division "Hunsingo A60" we joined with 5 members who are not equally active but fun is the most imporant thing. Till now we got about 233 points and obtained a 30th place overall from 53 competitors, just one contest (ARRL 10m) to go. So I guess we will not get a better place, but it doesn't matter. I started a few years ago as only one from our division, so we're making progress. Back to my contesting fatique, I really think I've done too much different contests and I will make a selection for next year.  I need some more time not only to continue to rebuilt parts of the house and realizing plans for the garden. But I still have an antennatower waiting for setup, I recently detached the kenpro rotor and bushing support and also the 2 winches. After 2 years in all kind of weather they are in bad shape and I have to revise them. Besides that I still need to test the modulation of my FT-817 headset which would be overmodulated according to some stations. And still there is my voicekeyer project waiting for years now, I should finish it one of these days. Well, enough to do next year I never have a dull moment in my radiohobby. And of course a lot to write about in this blog...

Hear your own signal at CN2R

I was surprised to hear my own modulation in contest working CN2R from Morocco. If you ever worked CN2R try it yourself at CN2R log.
